I ’d heard about Sydney’s father, but didn’t go to the funeral. I didn’t really know him. I’d met him when Sydney and I were kids and I stayed over, he was there physically, but he wasn’t there. I don’t even remember him ever addressing me. But he was the same with Sydney. I don’t think she really knew the man either.

I’d been out of my office because I’d flown to Dallas to court a new client. The client wanted me to spend at least three days in his company headquarters, so I’d get a feel for his business. This wasn’t unusual. Clients felt like their ad campaigns were better when we saw their day-to-day business operations.

Carly drove to Dallas Friday afternoon. We spent the weekend doing Dallas before driving back Sunday night.

​I settled back into my Monday morning ‘business as usual’ routine. After our Monday morning jam session, I started going through my top tray to catch up on anything I needed to catch up on after spending the week in Dallas.

My secretary assured me she’d sorted my correspondence from urgent to personal. ​I didn’t see Sydney’s letter until late Tuesday afternoon. She’d scrawled personal and confidential on the letter size envelope, so it sat in a stack of mail on my desk for at least a week. After reading it, I figured it was more of Sydney’s histrionics and put it in my portfolio case to take home with me, so I could show it to Carly that night. But, by the time we got in, changed, and cooked dinner, I’d forgotten all about the letter.
