Chapter 15

Exhaustion dogged Reece’s muscles. He cleaned up his workstation at shop class so he could hurry home to shower and train Zamina at his father’s gym. They still had to act uninterested in each other, but at least he didn’t have to hold himself in check while she pretended to be in love with Asher. Ora continued to leave them alone and barely cast them a glance during training where Reece had to admit Ora had a natural fighting instinct and was becoming one of his best students. Zamina didn’t take the training too seriously, but she was comfortable enough to protect herself from fake attacks.

“You got bags under your eyes, man. What you doing at night?” Hook elbowed him.

Reece smiled and shrugged. “Staying up late, fixing cars and weapons designing.”

“Well, get some rest so we can go on a double date with Sasha and Tammy.” Hook nodded in the direction of the only two girls in his shop class. They were beautiful and twins. One was fair-skinned with green eyes while the other was warm chocolate with curly hair and the same green eyes as her sister. The blond smiled at him. Hook winked at the brunette.

“Look, they are beautiful, but I’m not interested.”

Hook raised an eyebrow. “Are you, uh…”

He grinned. “I love girls, but right now, I am seeing someone on the down low, you know.”

Hook leaned on the table where Reece stood. “Anyone I know?”

“Could be, but I’m not telling until she’s ready.”

“Okay, okay, I can respect that. You didn’t seem the type to allow someone to be your dirty little secret.”

Reece grinned at a flash of all the things Zamina did to him when they were alone. She seemed to be a drug that he couldn’t get out of his system. It literally hurt to leave her when they had to go home from their secret spot. “I’m not, but she’s worth it. Really worth it.”

“Be careful with some of the girls here. They have a way of putting a ‘root’ in you.”

“Root?”

“My mother’s way of saying a love potion, spell, or bond that makes you addicted to them in a stalker way.”

He definitely felt like that, but wasn’t that normal? Love wasn’t something Reece thought he needed or even wanted until Zamina. “Sounds like love.”

“Nope, not love. It’s obsession.”

Reece was obsessed, but he knew that it was love. Hook was trying to scare him. “I’m obsessed, and I love her, so I got the root.” He smiled.

Hook sniffed him. “You smell of it. If you want to break the root, Jeb knows how.”

Reece frowned. “Stop, man. Don’t worry about me.” The bell rang. “I’ll be over on Sunday to give you the new door I designed for your car.”

“Bet.”

The teacher yelled out book homework for final exams, and Reece made a mental note of it as he headed to the door. Waiting just outside the rush of kids leaving class was Megan. He’d avoided her pop-up visits outside his classes, at the corner in the parking lot where he ate lunch, in the hallway on his way to the library.
