EVE

Everything was going so well that I probably should’ve known something was going to go wrong sooner or later.

It was just the way the world works. Whenever you think things are going perfectly is exactly the moment when the world pulls back and kicks you in the nuts.

I mean I didn’t have a pair of nuts for the world to kick me in, but you get the point. Things were going too well with Lily. I thought everything was all great and wonderful and I was even starting to think that all the suspicions I’d had at the beginning were ridiculous.

All that lasted right up to the moment we stepped out of the roller rink and I saw a familiar car sitting in the parking lot.

Lily was holding my hand and smiling as she talked to Katie about something. Katie and Beck had both thought it was pretty damn funny to interrupt us in the middle of our fun on the roller coaster ride, but it turns out it was late and the rink was about to close anyways so it wasn’t a huge deal.

Better that they came along and found us than the owners peeking through the curtain and catching us making out in there. That was a good way to get your ass banned from the place for a few days or maybe even a week.

All those thoughts fled my mind when I saw who was waiting for us. I stopped. It took Lily and Katie and Beck a couple of steps to realize that I’d stopped. Lily gave me an odd look, then she turned and followed my gaze across the parking lot.

It was them. The one group of girls that I didn’t want to see on my territory.

This was my territory, after all. This was my home away from home. This was my safe place. The place I went where I could be myself. Where I could let loose an not worry about people judging me for being into girls.

Not that I advertised it that much or had even brought a date here before Lily, but everyone knew I hung out with Katie and Beck and they had brought dates before and I was standing here trying to think of anything but the group of mean girls leaning against Lisa’s car on the other side of the gravel parking lot.

“What are they doing here?” I asked.

There was no question who I was asking. Katie and Beck were looking between us as though they weren’t sure what to do.

Well, Beck looked like she wasn’t quite sure what to do. Katie’s eyes narrowed and it was clear she was spoiling for a fight even if she didn’t know where the fight was coming from.

Then again Katie was always spoiling for a fight. And this was one that she’d probably be more than happy to participate in considering it was a group of girls who were pretty much the epitome of everything we hated about high school life.

Lisa grinned. Walked across the parking lot so she was standing in front of us.
