“What is it?” said Olivia.

“I just saw Jesse Waters. I don’t think Swanson was a one-off.”

“What do you mean?”

“Waters said he’d seen it happen before.”

“Seen what happened?”

“I’m pretty sure he’d seen members borrowing cars to leave before.”

Olivia swore.

“Exactly. I know you’d looked into Swanson, but I need you to dive into this angle—see if you can find anything in either direction, that someone at the Club was doing this before or that they’re doing this now.”

“I may need help, especially if I need to keep the Club under surveillance.”

“Do it. Just keep me informed of where we are with costs.”

“Done.” She paused. “What do you think this is exactly?”

“I’m not sure. But I’m concerned that more than one person has come to the Club, then left in another car when they need to avoid being noticed.”

“To sneak away for an affair?”

“Or worse, to have a secret meeting with a land developer.”

“No, worse is to have an alibi while you kill a land developer.”

“There’s that, yes.”

“Sneaky rich bastards.”

“Yep.”

“Are you going to ask Jurevicius about it?”

“I already did. He denied he ever left the Club.”

“I’m on it. Talk to you.”

“Thanks, Liv.”

I hung up, got in the car and drove, thinking, trying to sort through what this meant, and more importantly, what I thought Aiden Moore could prove.

I was almost home when my phone buzzed again. It was my sister-in-law, Kate.

“Hey, Kate. How did the volleyball—”

“Nate,” she choked out. “Nate, you have to meet us at the hospital.”

“What?! What are you talking about?”

Kate wasn't crying, but she was having trouble forming the words. “You have to meet us there, at St. Wendelin's.”

“Kate, what’s wrong?!”

“They thought it was just the heat, but his heart stopped.”

My thoughts flew to my brother Tom coaching all morning, then cleaning the stadium all afternoon. “Kate! Is he okay?”

“I don’t know. That’s Mom on the other line.” She choked back a cry. “Just meet us there.”

Kate hung up. I skidded into a driveway, turned around, and flew to the hospital, terrified for my brother Tom.
