Nine

Micah stepped from the ladder at last, stretching his sore, aching back and turning off the construction lights he’d picked up at the hardware store around the corner on Sandpiper Street. He stretched some more in the darkness of the alley between the Sweet Tooth and Brioche Café, the dim light soothing after his long, hot day.

The scaffolding he’d ordered from Home Emporium had been delivered a few hours earlier but he’d been too tired to put them all together. Now he sat heavily on the stack of paint splattered plywood and rested his weary legs.

Micah was gym strong, but it had been a while since he’d worked a full day, let alone one in the sweltering Florida sun. He’d been grateful when it had finally set a few hours earlier, and even more so now as he reached for his shirt, the damp sweat finally beginning to dry in the cool ocean breeze.

Fortunately Cash had brought him the biggest patty melt and Styrofoam container of lemonade he’d ever seen, which had lasted him all day. If only he’d stuck around long enough to share it with him. Or hell, even watch him eat it.

Instead Cash had handed them to him, mumbled something about “doing inventory,” and hustled back into the candy store without so much as a backward glance, to say nothing of blowing his newest employee a kiss.

Okay, sure, Micah hadn’t expected a sweltering make out session or tug job in full view of half the town of Fiesta, but … would a smile have killed him? A wink?

That had been hours ago and, now, his body sore from the long work day, skin sticky with sweat and sun, Micah wanted nothing more than to scrub himself up in the employee bathroom and spend a quiet evening with Cash on his back deck overlooking the ocean.

He stood, inspired by the thought, and peered once more out across the downtown shopping district. He’d forgotten how small and sleepy Fiesta could be, rolling up the sidewalks promptly at nine every night. Now, at nearly eleven, the entire town felt like the beach had that first night with Cash: quiet, serene, deserted, almost … apocalyptic.

If only it felt like home.

He turned and, the work spotlights cool enough now to move, brought them into the back stock room for safekeeping overnight. Cash had propped the door open for him earlier that day so he could pop in from time to time and cool off, grab a bottle of water, or take a piss. Now he slid the lamps just inside the door—he’d have to work night and day if he wanted to finish in a week—and locked it tight behind him.

The store was silent, having closed an hour earlier, and he didn’t see Cash anywhere. Dipping into the bathroom, Micah scrubbed up as best he could, washing off his chest and damp armpits, the front and back of his neck, and dousing his face before drying up with a handful of paper towels.
