Chapter Six

The sheets are cold where Lexie was last night. I knew this would happen. I knew the moment we were close, she’d leave. I just didn’t expect it to feel like she ripped out my heart and took it with her.

I get ready as quickly as I can, hating the reminder of the rumpled sheets on my bed. I take the path toward the main lodge in search of breakfast. I’m not really hungry but next time I see Lexie, I’d rather be around other people.

But fate doesn’t give a damn about what I want because she’s waiting for me on the porch of the main lodge.

She gives me a tight smile and passes me a cup of coffee. “Can we talk?”

“Yeah, sure.” She’s already prepared it the way I like so I take a sip. I know exactly what’s coming and I brace myself for it.

How many times have I seen her do this with her boyfriends? The moment they start to get close to her, she pulls away.

“Last night was fun. But it’s over and I don’t think we should talk about it again,” she says. She lets out a breath and stares into the horizon. She won’t even look me in the eye this morning.

I had hoped because we’d been friends for twelve fuckin’ years that it would mean something. That she’d be willing to take a chance on our chemistry. Clearly, I’m a dumb ass.

I hate this. The best night of my life is the one she wishes she could erase. I drain the rest of my coffee. “Yeah, sure.”

She turns to me and frowns. She opens her mouth like she’s going to say something, but I shake my head. We’re never going to look at that night the same way.
