While Winnie’s job-related woes were more intimate in nature, she wasn’t the only one who had problems with her boss that next Monday. Sarah was having her share of problems as well…with Victor Nicholas.

“I take one day off and Nicholas acts like I committed a major crime or something. He’s monitoring me like a hawk. If I could, I’d break the damn radio,” Sarah mumbled and glanced at her watch. “Thank God, my shift’s almost over.” Just as she logged in her last job and glanced at her route sheet for the next job, the crackle of the radio interrupted her train of thought.

“T-2, this is Base-One, Kay. Come in, T-2. Come in, T-2, Kay. This is Base-One, Kay. Come in, T-2,” Nicholas said.

“Base-One, this is T-2, Kay,” Sarah responded.

“T-2, return to the shop,” Nicholas ordered. “What’s your ETA, Kay?”

“Base-One, I didn’t copy that, Kay.” Sarah frowned at the receiver in her hand. She couldn’t believe Nicholas would ask her to come back to the garage when her shift wasn’t over. She had another two hours and change to go. What did she do to upset him tonight? “Come back, Base-One. Please repeat, Kay.”

“T-2, Return to the base, Kay,” Nicholas ordered for the second time. “Do you copy, Kay?” he asked with a trace of annoyance in his voice. He knew there was nothing wrong with Sarah Harris’ radio because he’d checked it out himself. Harris was playing games again. He wanted her butt back to the shop now.

“That’s a Roger, Kay.” Sarah sighed as she signed off.

“T-2, what’s your ETA, Kay?” Nicholas hadn’t forgotten that she didn’t answer his last question.

“Fifteen minutes, Kay.” Sarah’s mind raced. She immediately began to imagine the worst-case scenario. What if the union was wrong and her insurance company canceled her coverage? What if Nicholas found out she was driving around in a city vehicle with no insurance before she did? She’d be out of a job after eight good years with the city. She let out the breath she was holding. “Get your head together, Sadie,” she muttered. “You’re worrying about nothing. He’s pissed about something else.”

“That’s a Roger, Kay,” Nicholas responded as he glanced at his watch. “If Harris isn’t back here in fifteen minutes, I’m sending out a search party to bring her butt to me,” he murmured. “That’s if I don’t go get her myself!”

I hope he’s not gonna give me a hard time about how long I took on the last job, Sarah worried as she made the turnoff to cross over to the ramp going downtown. Victor Nicholas was always messing with her about the smallest little thing. One of the other drivers told her that Nicholas didn’t want her here. He said that women shouldn’t be tow truck drivers. He didn’t care what the city said about diversity, this job was too tough for a woman to handle. The driver said Nicholas really started freaking out the night she came back to the garage with the busted lip.
