Twenty-two

When I wake up, I’m surrounded by unfamiliar grey walls. Itchy cotton sheets are tangled around me. The first thing I notice is my clothing. I am no longer in my wet clothes. I am in a soft shirt. I look around at my surroundings. I’m in a small room with a wooden chair in the corner and a bedside table next to me. I see a picture on the table and squint my eyes in order to distinguish the person who saved me from the rain.

Dark eyebrows, dark hair. Pete.

I climb out of bed slowly, aches running all through me. 2:04 p.m. the clock reads. I sit on the edge of the bed and drink some water.

“You’re awake,” I hear a voice come from the door and I look over to see Pete standing in the doorway with two mugs in hand. I frown at him, confused about how I got here.

“First things first,” he says while placing the mugs down onto the desk. “I didn’t undress you. Amber did.”

“Amber?” I frown, completely confused. He nods.

“Amber and I were on the way to the gym for her shift and we saw you sitting on the curb.” His eyes soften. I chuckle.

“I had an argument with Kaidan,” I explain, but it’s really not that funny. Anger ignites in me when I think of what he did.

“What a prick,” Pete says bluntly. “I can’t believe he left you in the rain like that.” I shrug because he’s right. Kaidan is a prick.

“Amber had to leave for her shift after she got you changed,” Pete continues. “So we decided to put you to bed here, to get warm.”

“Thank you,” I say, because I’m lucky I didn’t get pneumonia. He smiles.

“I brought you cocoa.” He passes me a mug which smells deliciously like chocolate. I take it eagerly and have a sip. Mmm.

“Thanks again,” I say, giving him a smile. He nods.

“So last time I saw you was when Lucas did that elaborate performance.” Pete laughs. “You were awesome, by the way. Totally awesome.” I laugh with him.

“Thanks. I was so embarrassed,” I tell him.

“You shouldn’t have been. After you left, the principal took Lucas away from the gymnasium. Rumor has it, he’s been in detention every day since it happened,” Pete says and my mouth drops open.

“Punished by his own uncle? Jeez, that’s harsh.” I laugh, and Pete laughs with me.

“I know, um, that you said no to Lucas,” Pete begins after our laughter has subsided. “But I would love it if you came to homecoming with me.”

Boom. Butterflies.

“Really?” is the only word that comes from my mouth. His lips tilt to one side in a half smile.

“Yeah.” He shrugs. “You’re pretty darn awesome.”

I smile. “Why not? It’ll be fun,” I tell him as butterflies fly around my stomach manically. He raises his eyebrows.

“Is that a yes, then?” he asks.

I nod. “Yes. It’s a yes, Pete.”
