Chapter 5

What’s Left Standing

Brittney woke up to the sun streaming through her window. For a split second, she forgot about the storm from the night before. She got out of bed, getting dressed in a red cap sleeve dress with sunflowers dotting the skirt. Holding her breath, she walked out the front door and squinted to see the front half of the truck with the roof caved in. trudging through the mud to the door, she opened it, and water cascaded onto her feet.

“What am I going to do?” she asked herself. Turning to look at the house, she sighed. There were multiple branches on the roof and shingles missing and out of place. She had no idea how to fix a roof.

The schools were closed for the day, so she told Angela and Josh to come outside and help clear up the fallen debris from the yard.

Looking down the street, Brittney could see they were the lucky ones. Entire trees had fallen on the neighbor’s houses and cars. It seemed that nothing was spared. Brittney was devastated.

She called Cindy to check in on her and told her about the bakery truck.

“I’m glad you guys are okay. That storm was ferocious! We’ve got a broken window and some destroyed lawn chairs, but otherwise unscathed here,” Cindy said.

“Phew. That’s great news! I wish my truck was as lucky as you,” Brittney started.

“Brittney, the bakery truck will be good as new in no time, okay?” Cindy interrupted. “Sam will look into it. I’m sure everything will be okay,” she said.

“Okay,” Brittney responded sadly.

“Take care of yourself, Britt. We’ve got this covered. I’ll be back in touch shortly,” she said reassuringly.

“Thanks, sis, you too,” Brittney said and hung up.

Brittney’s mobile business was on hold. Her next call was to the insurance company to see what was covered in the event of a storm.

She opened the small lock of Brill’s cage and extended her arm. Brill obediently flew onto her arm and settled onto it gently, despite his strong talons.

“Hello,” he said. Brittney smiled, petting his head.

“Why is life so hard, Brill” she sighed.

Brill walked up her arm until he reached her shoulder, then tilted his head to rest on her head as though he was trying to comfort her. “God guides through it,” he said.

“Um, what?” Brittney said, wide-eyed.

“God guides through it,” he repeated.

“Oh, my, Brill,” Brittney laughed. “Or should I say, Grams!”

It didn’t take long before Josh and Angela came back inside to change out of sandals and into sturdy boots.

“He is right, mom!” said Josh, overhearing Brill.

“God got us through storms before, and He will again,” Angela said, pulling up her boot.

Brittney placed Brill back in his cage and reached out an arm toward Angela and Josh.

“Come here, you two,” she said and hugged them tightly. “I love you, kids.”

Brittney was glad that the two were there for each other. Storms like these reminded Brittney how much she needed the people in her life. Her family was her anchor. And she missed having a man at times like this.
