The twitch in between my shoulder blades had returned. I stopped and searched the pedestrians and streets. I wasn't casual about it because I was weary of the sensation of being stalked. I wanted whoever it was to know I knew they were there. People strolled by me on the sidewalk, many not giving me a second glance as I searched for the person who tailed me. As before, I didn't see anyone who stood out. It was frustrating but I consoled myself that we were leaving in the morning. I wouldn't be subjected to someone's morbid curiosity when we were home.

I left two of the warriors outside to guard the entrance of the bank. The rest of us entered the Union Trust and Savings Bank to see what disaster Theo Sullivan had left in a safety deposit box. While we waited for the manager in the little private white room, I tried to contact Ushna. My call went to voicemail, and I left a message letting him know I'd be back at the house after we left the bank.

I didn't pay any attention to the manager as he brought in the box. I stared at the steel-gray container and wondered what kind of hell Theo brought to my doorstep. Drawing in a fortifying breath, I used the key and unlocked the case. I pulled out birth certificates for all of his children, a copy of the guardianship paperwork, which was drawn up one week before his death. There were sealed envelopes with each of the pups' names on them. Then at the bottom of the box lay a thick brown package with a smaller white one taped to the front. My name was written in big block letters.

I opened the seal and poured the contents out on the table. There were pictures of Daniel posed with different individuals. Some of the pictures were of those same individuals alone. Names and dates were written on the back of the photos. The manila folder held various documents, and the more I rummaged through it, the more confused I had become.

I tore open the white envelope in frustration and pulled out the letter addressed to me.
