Chapter Eleven
Hughâs arms felt strong and safe as he lowered Meg to the bed. She longed to be a part of him, to join with him as she had with Joe.
She didnât want to wait for them to undress. Just the sight of him shrugging out of his jacket set off a hunger so powerful that she caught Hugh by his silken tie and pulled him down.
Grinning, he braced his hands on either side of her. âI wouldnât want to ruin your dress.â
âMy dress will be fine.â
âCan I take my shoes off?â
âIf you insist.â Without waiting, Meg unbuckled his belt, remembering instinctively how to unwork it by touch. She knew so much about him, including how quickly he could elevate her past herself into a glorious world of sensation. She could hardly wait.
Laughing, Hugh kicked off his shoes. âYouâre some woman!â
âItâs been two years. Thatâs long enough.â After fiddling with the buttons on his shirt, Meg gave up. âOh, keep the darn thing on.â
âNot so fast. Iâve never done this with you before, or at least I donât remember it clearly,â Hugh said. âI want to enjoy every minute.â
She stared up at him in the faint moonlight streaming through the window. She yearned for the nip of his teeth against her breasts, for the hardness of him between her thighs, yet something held her back.
He didnât remember being her husband. Didnât remember the first time theyâd made love, when she gave him the special gift sheâd saved all her life.
And she was about to throw away their reunion as if it meant nothing more than momentary lust.
Although the heat refused to die, something inside Meg shrank back. âHughâ¦â
He rolled down beside her on the bed as his hands feathered her dress up her legs. âIf you insist, howeverâ¦â
âHugh!â
He stopped. âDid I miss something?â
âItâs not your fault.â
âWhatâs not my fault?â He propped himself on one elbow. In the semidarkness, he formed a watchful silhouette.
âI just realizedâI mean, making love means more to me than this,â Meg said.
âMore than being with a man who loves you?â
His words should have reassured her. They didnât. âYou canât love me. You donât know me well enough.â
âWe were married!â
âJoe and I were married,â Meg said. âYouâre only partly him.â
A warning note crept into his voice. âIâll never be him completely, Meg.â
âI didnât mean that,â she said. âI mean, to you Iâm still a strange woman. Maybe you find me attractiveâ¦â
âThatâs an understatement!â
ââ¦but you donât remember the stages of falling in love. We havenât had a chance to go through them again. At least, you havenât.â
Meg stopped, feeling miserable. Hugh had every right to be angry at her for leading him on and then stopping him cold.
âIâm not as concerned about the past as you are,â Hugh admitted. âMaybe Iâve become used to living with a blank space in my brain, although itâs shrinking. I do remember quite a few things about us, more than you suspect. I donât think my amnesia is the real problem, though.â
âIt isnât?â Meg asked.
