“Um…”

“Oh, don’t worry, kid. I may be a cadet, but I’m still a soldier. We don’t go around attacking civilians. And it looks like the matter is settled for now. Hey, Belt Princess! I’ll let you off this time, but you cause any more trouble, I won’t show any mercy!”

“Oh, Sir Lloyd, Sir Lloyd, Sir Lloyd!”

“She’s not listening…”

A moment later, Choline came running over, catching wind of the commotion.

“Oy! What’s goin’ on?! Allan, Selen, they said you were fixin’ to throw down! …What the heck is that?!” She pointed at Selen, who was busy rubbing her cheek all over Lloyd’s chest.

Allan snapped to attention and explained the situation.

“—and that’s the long and short of it. The problem’s solved for now.”

“Riiiight…well, at least it didn’t turn into anything major. Huh. Lloyd? I feel like I’ve heard that name before…where was it…?”

While Choline was searching her memories, Merthophan & Co. finally arrived to the scene. The crowd parted before him.

“What’s all the fuss?” His dispassionate gravitas was enough to silence the crowd of onlookers, who were mostly students.

Choline was the first to answer. “Oh! Merthophan! And Riho and…Chrome?!”

She was clearly surprised by this last one.

“What’s going on, Choline?”

“Uh, long story short, Allan and Selen were fighting, but this Lloyd kid stopped them.”

““Lloyd?!””

In response to this chorus, Selen finally pulled her face out of his chest and launched into a passionate explanation. “Exactly! To protect me! To stand in my stead! To fight this brute of a man!”

“…Says the woman running around town ripping people’s chest hair out,” Allan grumbled. But nobody was listening to him.

“What are you thinking?” Riho asked.

Merthophan grunted. “Riho Flavin…you must know. With everything you’ve experienced on the battlefield…you must be able to estimate his strength.”

Riho shot him a look, clearly stating she had no idea why he was bringing this up now.

“If Lloyd were to fight…,” Merthophan continued, “he’d have a chance to prove his power… Wouldn’t you want to see that?”

Realization dawned on her. At a glance, Lloyd looked like he couldn’t even hurt a fly—she’d doubted her own instincts when she’d met him for the first time.

“Yeah, I could stand to see him in action…”

Riho was mostly in it for the money, but sheer curiosity took its place this time.

“If he thoroughly defeats Allan…that might help my grounds to get him enlisted,” Merthophan muttered. He took a few steps over to Allan. “Is that true? Are you really willing to fight this Lloyd kid?”

Allan snapped his heels together, saluting. He shook his head. “No, sir. We’ve settled the problem in question…and I consider myself a soldier, sir. I wouldn’t dream of laying a finger on an innocent civilian.”

“Take a hint.”

“Huh?”

While Allan was playing the part of a model soldier, Merthophan gave him a serious look…no, more like a pointed glare. Allan had no idea what he’d done to incur the colonel’s wrath, so he just stood there, mouth agape.

“You’re a soldier! And you’re telling me you can’t even beat up a mere civilian?!” he roared.

The crowd gasped in horror, and Choline quickly jumped in.
