TWENTY-SIX

WE STOOD OUTSIDE of the Crapateria’s cracked kitchen window like a couple of bandits.

Only we weren’t bandits; we were prisoners. And if we got caught, we would end up in a place far worse than a jailhouse.

“Corin,” I whispered. “What the hell are we doing?”

She batted her eyelids. “I need your help. I promise, it’ll be worth your time.”

“But what does that mean?” I asked.

In case you didn’t catch that, I was having second thoughts.

My racing heart stuck to my chest like gum. I was so nervous that I was starting to feel like I had to pee.

“Stop letting your mind control you,” she said. “You’re a man, right? So man up!”

Those words punched me in the gut—she was questioning my manhood. I felt insecure about my body all of a sudden—I knew I wasn’t exactly the definition of masculinity. I wrapped my arms around my chest to cover up the fact that my puffy nipples were poking through my thin pajama top.

“Corin, I just want to know if you like me. That’s why I followed you. Why the hell are we here?”

Corin smirked. “You’ll find out. The risk will be worth the reward. Now stop acting like a pussy.”

Maybe I really wasn’t man enough to be with her. Part of me wanted to abandon her, but most of me wanted to stay. I had to stay. I had to find out if she liked me or not. But what the heck was she up to? Everything about her was mysterious. And as confusing as it is, in some ways, it only made me like her more.

Luckily, there weren’t many lights near the Crapateria, so at least we were hidden in the shadows. I kept glancing over my shoulder, expecting Asshole Jim to come running up to find us and take us to Mental. My nerves were pinching my brain. This was reckless for a number of reasons. We were surely going to get caught.

Corin stepped forward and forced the window open while I kept watch.

“Wait, you have to tell me what we’re doing,” I said, panicked.

“No, I don’t.”

She knocked the screen into the room and it echoed as it bounced on the floor. I squinted through the trees, but it was too dark to see a thing. The fog disrupted my vision even more. If someone was coming, we wouldn’t spot them until they were already upon us.

Corin poked her head inside to make sure that it was all clear. Then she turned to me and said, “You first.”

I froze. The only thought running through my head was Hell no.

Corin looked at me like I was a wimp. “Come on, stop acting like such a bitch. We don’t have a lot of time.”

But I did actually feel like a little bitch. I didn’t have nearly as much courage as Corin did. I shook my head. We were in prison camp. There were probably cameras everywhere. I was positive that we were going to get caught.

“Please don’t call me a little bitch,” I said.
