Chapter 9

Surprisingly Miranda had not had any trouble sleeping. Maybe it was the obvious support of not only Joel but the other board members. Their unilateral displeasure at Mr. Babcock’s shenanigans had been balm to her battered emotions. When Ginny questioned her the next morning, she glossed over the meeting by explaining that it was just as they had suspected; they’d had questions about her being a suitable youth advisor for the youth group.

Ginny grumbled, “You should have taken me as a character reference. I could have told them a million stories of the help and encouragement you’ve given everyone at Sage.”

Miranda barely suppressed a giggle at the thought of pregnant Ginny being her character witness before Calvin and Sylvia Babcock.

The next few days passed peacefully. Ginny and Miranda fell into a comfortable routine. Ginny continued to pick up the slack with housekeeping and took it upon herself to answer the phone multiple times a day and write down messages. This freed the Church Lady to concentrate on Grammy’s care and Miranda to get on with mapping out her future business and filling orders for her current one. After dinner and with Grammy settled for the night, the girls took advantage of the late-setting sun in the Western Idaho sky, settling on the front porch with glasses of iced tea and talking while Miranda knitted furiously on yet another order.

At the youth meeting on Thursday, while they were enjoying refreshments, Miranda had called out, “Anyone interested in working for food?” The chatter halted and everyone looked her way.

“I am going to open a yarn store. It’s the old Samson Coffee store, and I need help cleaning it. I’ll feed lunch to everyone who shows up on Saturday, willing to work.”

“Bribery, Miranda?” Trey grinned.

“The best – all the Pizza Factory pizza, lasagna, and cinnamon twists you can eat.” They were all interested, most of them confirming they’d be there.

Joel hadn’t contacted her since the infamous board meeting, so she didn’t know what, if anything, had transpired at the special board meeting the following day. She was glad, therefore, that during clean up he drew her aside for a moment.

“How are you feeling? No after effects?” his eyes showed concern.

“No,” she smiled and brushed a strand of hair off her face. “Like I said, I’ve had trouble with panic attacks for several years now, but they don’t have any lasting affects.”

“I just wanted to let you know that I did not ignore the attack on you. Calvin Babcock has handed in his resignation. That situation should never have happened. I am so sorry I didn’t know about it in time to cut it off. Not only that, but my secretary is definitely on borrowed time for her part in that fiasco.”

“Thank, Joel. I appreciate your support.” She felt compelled to add, “Maybe this will help Sylvia realize the damage that can be done by gossip. Hopefully, she will learn from her mistake and be the better for it.”

His eyebrows rose, “The quintessential pastor’s daughter – second-chances for everyone.
