Chapter 7

THEY FOUND rooms in the touristy section of the city. They were budget rooms, but clean. Day worked over his secure connection with Kyper to get the translation he needed, while Knight had been assigned the task of trying to determine how they might access the mine they were interested in.

“Kyper says the mine has an open tunnel entrance,” Day told him excitedly. They had met in Day’s room because he had the comm stuff. “In the story Hans says he stood day after day outside the cavernous entrance that looked like a big hole in the earth. If it’s accurate, then that means it might not be any harder to access than the last one.”

“Is the translation completed?”

“Yeah, and Kyper is working to get some protection on Peter and his family. He says he has contacts in Germany who won’t raise suspicion. I don’t know exactly what that means, but he says he’s on it.”

“What do your plans show?” Knight asked, watching as Day brought up the layout of the tunnel he’d acquired through a mine-diving website.

“It’s a labyrinth in there. The tunnels go in many directions, with various levels. So it’s going to take some time. According to the diving site, it’s in pretty good shape, and there are no major cave-ins.”

“So how do we go about this?”

“I’m not sure,” Day said. “If this is the place, we need to trace Hans’s steps as best we can, then figure out what he could have done to get the works to safety without being discovered. Unfortunately we aren’t going to be able to do that without seeing the place. He wasn’t found out—we know that—so if we’ve followed the trail this far, then we have to take it the rest of the way.”

“What are you going to do now?”

“Walk. I need to get out of here and think for a while.” Day was getting antsier by the minute.

“Do you want me to go with you?”

Day shrugged. “You can if you want.” He started putting the communication equipment back in his bag. Then he put on his coat and slung the pack onto his back. Knight went back to his room and put on his coat, checking that everything was exactly the way he’d left it. Then he met Day, and they strode down the hallway.

A dusting of snow had fallen recently, and clouds hung over the city, but Day hardly seemed to notice. He walked and said nothing, eyes straight ahead. More than once Knight wondered if Day saw anything around him at all. “What’s bothering you?”

“What? Oh nothing.”

Knight wanted to smack him for lying. “You’ve been preoccupied since we left Straubing.”

“I need to get in Hans’s head.”

“You can’t,” Knight said. “That isn’t possible. The situation we have is very different from the one Hans faced. The war was ending, his side had lost, chaos reigned, and the Russians were on their doorstep. How can we understand their world falling apart like that? There’s too much we haven’t experienced.
