For a Friday night, the coffee shop wasn’t overly crowded. A modern folk song played quietly from a speaker in the back of the bistro near their table.

After an entire week of rain, the tiny constraints of the cottage had closed in on her, so Rowan had worked even longer hours than usual to avoid feeling trapped. She had been thrilled to get Melanie’s text, asking for company since James was pulling an all-nighter at the hospital.

A night out getting to know a new friend seemed the perfect treat to end a long week.

“So, let me get this straight.” Melanie took a sip of the herbal tea and set the cup down, squinting with concentration. Or maybe it was from the powerful punch of the sour lemon balm tea. A hint of it drifted toward Rowan, sitting adjacent at the square table. “Landon is your ex-husband’s best friend.”

She confirmed that with a nod while sipping from the straw, the iced chai latte sliding smoothly down her throat.

“And he didn’t tell you that he’d invited Mannix?”

“Nope. Not a word. I didn’t know until I saw him walking toward us.” Six feet plus of sun bronzed muscle and man. Blinking away the image, she snatched a napkin and fanned herself. “It’s a little warm in here, don’t you think?”

Melanie cocked her eyebrows. “I’m the pregnant one, but I find it quite comfortable.”

Rowan blew out a breath then took another long swig of the iced drink.

“Don’t you find that strange?” Melanie studied her.

“Definitely too early for hot flashes.”

Her new friend chuckled. “I think I know what’s got you so worked up.”

“Really? What?” Another fast fan of the napkin did nothing to cool her cheeks or neck.

“You’re still in love with him.”

“Mannix? No!” Even she detected the lie in her voice.

Melanie hitched those delicate eyebrows again and waited.

Her shoulders deflated with a huff. “Yes.”

“What are you going to do about it?”

Do about it? “Nothing.”

“Nothing?” Melanie screeched, leaning forward as far as her belly allowed. “You have to do something!”

“I work with him, Melanie. Technically, he’s my boss.” She slid some unruly waves behind an ear.

Although Gramps had set it up so that she reported to Trace, Mannix was clearly the one in charge of the company. Outside of Gramps, that is. But from what she could tell from the other employees and even Mannix had said that the elderly man was stepping back and allowing the younger generation to lead the organization.

“That may be so, my new friend, but love transcends the workplace. And time.” Melanie pressed her hand over Rowan’s on the table briefly before squeezing her eyes closed and reciting from memory. “Love is patient and kind. It doesn’t envy or boast. It’s not proud or rude or self-seeking. It’s not easily angered, and it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.”

“I haven’t read that in ages.” Truthfully, during her quiet
