B efore stepping aside, Sebastian glances over at me first to make sure I’m okay dancing with his friend. I nod back and force a small grin. It’s just one dance. What can it hurt? At this point, we’re all locked in this house with nowhere to go, at least for a little while longer. It would be far more awkward to make things into a big deal and have Jonathan upset at me for the rest of the trip.

Besides, everyone keeps saying Jonathan’s such a nice guy. I don’t want to be an asshole.

Sebastian offers to get us waters and disappears into the kitchen, allowing Jonathan to take his place. I let out a sigh as Jonathan smiles from ear to ear and twirls me around the dining room. His hands tighten around my waist as we dance, but I make sure to keep my arms loose around his neck to keep distance. I can’t help but notice he’s shorter and much skinnier than Sebastian. Already I miss Sebastian’s muscles, tight and well-defined from all those hours on the soccer field.

The music switches to a fast, popular song that I recognize right away. It has a familiar, thumping dance beat that’s hard to resist. I let the rhythm take over and try to have fun with Jonathan, letting him sway me around to the beat. Perhaps I just need to lighten up. Everyone else seems to love the guy. Cam. Blake. Sebastian.

How bad can he be?

“You smell so good,” he says, pressing his nose against my neck. He takes in a long, shuddering breath, like he’s breathing me in. “What’s that scent?”

“It’s deodorant, Jon.”

“Well, it’s ah-mazing,” he says, sighing against my cheek. “Mmm.” His mouth is so close, the smell of alcohol overpowers my senses. It’s like he drank an entire liquor store. “I’ve been wanting to dance with you all night.”

“Uh huh,” I say, noncommittal.

I close my eyes and shut him out, concentrating on the music. Shake my hips. Spin. Twirl. I lose myself in the song.

I’ve always liked to dance but never had time for it. Not like Val and Nia did. They were on the cheer and dance squad all four years of high school. Even though I was good enough to join them, I didn’t have time for weekly rehearsals or football games every single weekend. I had to work at the Mouse Trap instead and help Mom pay our bills.

I never stopped loving to dance, though. It’s so freeing. You don’t have to lie or hide or pretend to be anything or anyone else when you dance. You just are.

Jonathan’s lips press against mine, shattering the mood.

“Jonathan!” My eyes fly open, and I push him away. “What are you doing?”

He freezes in place.

“Whatttsss wrong?” he stammers, complete shock on his face. “I thought you wanted me to kiss you.”

“WHAT?” My body stiffens. “Why would you think that?”

“Because we were so close and—”

“It’s called dancing!”

He blinks and swallows hard, his face reddening so much the flush spreads all the way to the tips of his ears.
