out into the night. She knew now, more than ever, that she needed to confront him.

She was still unaccustomed to the resort at night. The small lights encircling the pool giving it its romantic glow and the haunting silence between the restaurant and the patio bar. She saw him before he saw her. He was still behind the bar putting away the last of the rum bottles and cleaning the counter as the last of the tourists were finishing their drinks and staggered up to their rooms. She couldn’t believe it. “How could he do this?” she thought. If only she had known sooner. She could have saved Percy. When he saw her he looked up and gave her one of his boyish grins but quickly looked away. He knew she had something important to say by the way she was walking.

Sophie sat patiently at the edge of the bar and waited until the last tourist shook Alejandro’s hand and bid him good night. He started wiping the bar and didn’t raise his eyes. When she couldn’t take it any longer she said, “Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I didn’t want to frighten you, my love.” He talked while cleaning. His hands never stopped moving.

“You can stick your my love bullshit up your Cuban ass! I know it was you and I’m going to the police.”

He reached up and took her hand, pressing it hard against the bar.

“Do you want to know why I did it?” He kept hold of her hand and forced her to follow him along the bar as he stepped out from behind it. He pulled her to the back corner of the pool deck. She was trembling but he held onto her tightly.

“Sit down!” He pushed her down into one of the deck chairs, which was hidden in darkness. He sat down beside her and she could see the way his chest heaved up and down as he became more and more angry with her. She thought of screaming but thought that maybe she should just hear what he had to say. It was the way he looked in the dim pool light. She was still in love with him. And then she remembered Percy and couldn’t bear but
