Chapter Twenty-Nine

Kerian was in a bad mood. He had purposefully taken the long route back to his cabin, mumbling and muttering to himself as he tried to review Colette’s earlier comments and see if there was any way he could have misunderstood them. He arrived back at his cabin and threw open the door to find Marcus sitting with the smaller notebook he had been given at the monastery, the book lying open in his hands, flicking through the pages, and adding notes in his own scratchy handwriting.

“What are you doing?” Kerian snapped without thinking.

“Recording our travels,” Marcus shot back, before pausing as if caught in a lie. “Thomas is looking for you and he’s really angry.” He replaced the cork in the top of his inkpot and started to gather his things, eyeing Kerian from the corner of his eye and flushing red.

Kerian looked on, too worked up in his own thoughts to notice the out of character actions.

“Why is he angry?” Kerian asked. “I haven’t done anything to upset him. Has Ashe stolen something again? He can’t keep blaming me for that little characters action all the time.”

“He wants the map.” Marcus said finally, stopping Kerian as swiftly as he closed the book, he had been writing in.

“Oh.” Kerian paused, lost for words. He turned his attention fully on Marcus and glared. “So now what are we going to do?”

“You started this lie. You finish it.” Marcus snapped back, sidestepping around Kerian’s scowling face to leave him standing alone in the cabin. Kerian slammed his hand into the cabin door causing Marcus to jump.

“I wouldn’t be in this damned mess if you had given me the map when I asked.” Kerian moved to slam the door in Marcus’s face but Marcus snapped back pushing the door back against him. The door protested at the treatment and a loud crack split the air. The door fell from its hinge and crashed to the floor. Kerian looked down at the door then back up at Marcus and resumed his verbal attack.

“If we don’t show Thomas the map, everything we have worked towards is in tatters, our quest is lost and this ship will be turned about, and all because you were too damned proud to share that stupid map with me.”

“Everything we have worked towards?” Marcus reflected. “If I remember rightly the only person who has tried to coerce this crew through lies and subterfuge is you. I certainly had no part in it. As for everything being in tatters it would appear that you are the sum cause of that.” He gestured at the ruins of the door as if to emphasise his point.

“I wasn’t the only one that wanted to go to this island.” Kerian snapped back. “You have as much a vested interest in this destination as I do.”

“That is undeniable.” Marcus acknowledged. “My faith has instructed me to go to the island, but my actions are open for all to see, not corrupted with the selfish reasoning that powers your own.
