Chapter 7
“There’s more in this world than you know, and I’m one of them,” I explained as I started to fill Daran in and navigated onto the expressway. “I’m one of the good guys though. The Franks brothers are not.”
“I could have told you that.” He snickered. “What are you and what are they?”
“I’m an elf,” I answered as I let my ears go back to their normal pointed tips and turned my head so he could see them. “The Franks are witches.”
“You mean like dance-naked-under-the-full-moon Wiccans?”
“No,” I growled, annoyed at the way Hollywood portrayed supernatural beings. “I’m not talking some poser chicks dressing up in black and making fucking feathers float. Witches are dangerous, conniving, immoral, soulless bastards and bitches who care nothing for anyone but themselves and their power. These two are strong enough to control Alice without even blinking an eye.”
“Why take them to your house then?” he asked, not even seeming freaked out by what I just dumped on him. He was keeping his head above the crazy water and focusing. Good man.
“Because I have eleven friends I live with that are all elves and our mansion is on enough land that no one will hear their screams when the werewolves we called over rip them to shreds.”
“And you’re going to hide two bodies how?”
“The werewolves will eat them and absorb their power,” I answered bluntly. Okay, so I wasn’t the best at sugarcoating things, but we were running out of time for questions as we got closer.
“And you’re bringing me into this why?” There was a little panic in his voice then. I was kinda wondering when that would show up. But, then again, I was pretty sure anyone would worry when I mentioned the werewolves would be eating people today. Whoopsies!
“How suspicious would it have looked if we didn’t have our attorney with us?” I asked, wanting to roll my eyes, but he wasn’t screaming or anything, so I could cut him a little slack.
“Umm, what do you do with people who find out what you are?” Now he sounded scared.
“Depends on the person, but worst case we wipe your memory, and it’s like nothing happened. No harm, no foul, no brain damage.” I shrugged, trying my best for lighthearted and not threatening. Even though the situation was tense, I could see Shely trying not to laugh at my antics from the corner of my eye.
“You are either really the good guys, or you’re a very good liar,” he said quietly.
“I was born in the North Pole,” I replied, trying not to laugh at what I was going to say next. “How bad could I be?”
“Fair enough.” Look at that, it worked!
I whipped into our drive and swiped my keycard. When the gates opened, I raced up to the house and parked on the side. Ten of my friends were gathered out front, but where was Surprise?
“He met his mate the same night you did and is handling something with the mate,” Button said as if answering my unspoken question.
