Like striking a match, sexuality flared through his limbs and shot along all his nerve endings. He was suddenly so aroused. He could barely think of anything else besides getting Evangeline naked. Then it dawned on him, she looked worried. Her plush, full lips were still trembling with emotion.

It was not an expression he was used to seeing on her face. Strangely, it made him want to pause long enough to pass his hand over the heavy, straight mass of her hair.

He sat up, “Wait. Why am I on the ground?”

Tears were streaked down her face and there were blackened soot marks on her palms.

“What happened to your hands?”

She turned them over and studied them as if she’d only just noticed, herself. “I guess that what happens when I heal someone without my protective runes drawn on.”

“Heal someone? What happened?”

“The house has some sort of defense system and that arrow you shot bounced off it and came back at you.”

“I was hit by my own bolt. That’s embarrassing.”

She nodded. “It stopped your heart but my magic started it again. Only I used too much power and then I was drunk and Grimm came and lectured me and put me to sleep and now I’m hungover.”

“You saved me.” He grabbed her by the wrist, hauled her against his chest, and as she oofed at the impact and laughed, he snaked his other hand around the back of her neck and kissed her.

He ate it all down. He devoured her, greedily. He stiffened into a painful hard spike of desire, while she slipped her arms around his waist, molded her body to his, and kissed him back. She met him, greed for greed, ragged breath for breath. He had never felt so alive, so connected to someone.

So perplexed by all of it. By her.

There was something vulnerable in her face, like fine, thin crystal. For a moment she looked blinded, lost, and her lower lip trembled before she sucked it between even, white teeth. The sight bothered him greatly. He wanted to tuck her face into his neck and shelter that fragile vulnerability from the rest of the world so no one else ever saw it.

As he stared, the expression vanished and she snapped back to alertness. The mischief came back slowly, but it did come back.

She laughed up at him. “I’m sorry but I’m not feeling the greatest. Grimm said there was only one cure but he wouldn’t tell me what it was. I think he’s punishing me.”

Lightly, he touched the dark smudge of shadow underneath one of her eyes. All joking aside, she did need more rest.

“Thank you,” he said seriously. “Now, let’s get you back to the cottage. We’ll try this again tomorrow.”
