Chapter 17

Langley, Virginia

Vice President Harris stormed into Director Cabot’s Langley office while he sat at his desk, going through his morning routine of reading an inbox full of emails and enjoying his morning cup of coffee. On that day, however, that routine would be short-lived. As he quickly glanced up from his computer, startled, the Vice President leaned over Cabot’s desk.

“What part of covert doesn’t make sense to you, director?” the Vice President asked, taking a seat in front of Cabot. “We are trying to fuck up Russia’s nuclear ideas, not make them worse for us! This is still a clandestine agency, isn’t it?”

Sipping from his cup, Cabot calmly set the mug down and folded his hands on the desk.

“I’m sorry, Mister Vice President,” he answered. “But, you’ll have to be a little more specific.”

“Ok, let me be clear, then,” he said, placing a laptop onto the desk and turning it so Cabot could read it. “Is this clear enough for you, director?”

As the CIA Director glanced up at the headline, his facial expression abruptly changed. The article was from a Russian News Agency, translated into English.

Russian special forces involved in massive shoot out with an unknown force in the Russian forest, not far from the Capitol of Moscow. There were reported to be numerous soldiers killed in this act of violence. The Russian Government is attempting to locate the perpetrators of this hostile act. Anyone with any information should promptly report to their local authorities. This type of vileness against the Russian military or Government will not be tolerated. These criminals will be caught and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Reporting from Moscow, this isNatalia Bykov, RT News.

“You get it now, director?” Asked Harris. “We can’t have assets running around a country like Russia, getting into shootouts with the Russian military. Now, this shit has made the Russian media!”

Vice President Harris collapsed the laptop and put it back into his bag.

“We are handling it,” Mister Vice President, said Cabot. “The man just outed a double agent, the one who is believed to be responsible for the leak. I’ve been in direct contact with our man. He has his orders. We have things under control, sir.”

“You’d better,” replied Harris. “We are supposed to be preventing Russia from starting an all-out nuclear war, not provoking one. More importantly, we have innocent American citizens to think about. Your job depends on it, John! Is that clear?”

Cabot understood that it wasn’t Roger’s fault that they’d been exposed. He also conceded that they never should have involved Demetri, in the first place. He’d been found and approached by undercover CIA Officers hiding out in Estonia after deserting his Spetsnaz unit. He had all the signs of a defector.

Demetri seemed like a man who’d grown frustrated and weary of his home country and the path it was taking. The agents believed they could turn him. And, for a while, it seemed as though they had. He’d provided valuable intelligence about Russia’s military and inside information on his highly secretive Spetsnaz unit.
