Chapter 13

Kai

I open my lips even though I haven’t made out with anyone in six years. It feels so natural with Jake, and my heart is still working at full speed after falling off the ladder. Once again, he’s saved me. Now I get to taste his hot tongue and enjoy the tickle of his beard.

But while I don’t back away, I’m confused.

He’s kissed me on the forehead, on the cheek, on the neck even, but this is a full-on experience fueled by emotions I can’t pinpoint because my own are obscuring whatever Jake’s intention might be.

It’s as if this kiss has ignited a powder keg inside me, and I can no longer fight my feelings for him. It’s tenderness, affection, friendship, and a whole pot of sizzling-hot arousal.

Even Jake’s touch, which felt good from the start, is different now as he strokes my back in gentle swipes, holding me while we kiss like a real couple. With tongue and everything.

My mind is a chaotic jumble, but I shiver when he teases my palate.

A whistle.

“Wow, guys, get a room,” Quinta says as I pull back, staring at Jake’s flushed face. His eyelids look heavy, and he initially tries to follow my lips but is stopped by Levi and Matt, who appear at our sides with concerned expressions.

“You all good?”

Jake swallows and meets my gaze. “Yeah. All safe.”

I stare into his warm brown eyes, unsure what to think while the ghost of his kiss still lingers on my lips. “Thank you,” I mumble. “I wouldn’t be able to work if I broke my arm.”

Levi shakes his head. “Seriously, Kai? That’s what you worry about?”

“I mean… it’s not like I’d die.” But I still hold onto Jake’s neck, kind of afraid to let go.

Aaron’s expression is grim as he speaks. “I’ve seen a documentary where a woman died falling from her bed. Anything can happen if you’re not careful.”

“You were falling on your head,” Jake adds in a toneless voice. Kyle and Cass have gone to deal with the dog outside, but everyone else gathers around us, staring at me, full of worry.

“It did look dangerous,” Quinta admits before ruffling my hair. “Good thing Superboyfriend saved the day.”

And then kissed me.

What is Jake even thinking? I have no idea what’s going on in his head. Is his sexuality… flexible? Was it a spur-of-the-moment thing? A test drive? Or just something he felt was appropriate for a fake boyfriend to do?

I stroke his soft beard with a chuckle. “He definitely looks out for me.”

Jake swallows hard, still holding on to me as if I’m a baby in need of swaddling.

Levi clears his throat. “You two look shaken. Maybe you want to take five?”

Jake nods and rubs my back again. “Yes. I think we should.”

Oh no.

He wants to talk about the kiss. I just know it.

And I kinda do too, but I guess I dread hearing him explain himself. He might say that the kiss didn’t matter to him and then add that we might have taken the fake boyfriend thing too far.
