CHAPTER 13

Stepping around fallen branches and loose fronds littering the trail, Lincoln and Mich led the way back to the creek. A few steps behind, Dallas and Lex kept their steadfast gaze on the two men ahead of them, their weapons ready at their sides.

The journey to the bunker had been relatively easy with the wind behind them, compared with their current walk back to the creek. Facing the gale force winds head-on along a dimly lit jungle trail with no protection of any kind from the swirling gusts and lethal projectiles flying through the air, was not a situation Lincoln or Mich cared to be in.

Mich flashed a glance at Dallas and Lex clambering through the ground cover, getting further behind, and decided the two were not within earshot. He edged close to Lincoln. “What do you think they see in each other? I mean, they don’t exactly look like the perfect couple. Lex is what—five foot two? And big red has to be closing in at six feet. What’s the attraction?”

Lincoln tossed a palm branch aside and shot a look in the women’s direction. “You mean apart from both having psychopathic tendencies? Who knows? Maybe they met at Psychopaths Anonymous. I suppose opposites attract, that type of thing.”

“Big red mentioned twenty million dollars. Is that type of money really stashed in the hotel’s vault?”

“We have some rich clientele for sure, but nobody in his right mind is going to bring twenty million dollars to a secluded hotel.”

“That’s what I figured. So what do you think she’s talking about?”

“I have no idea. I suppose we’ll find out sooner rather than later.”

“What do we do about Lex and big red?”

“Still working on it.” Lincoln gestured toward Lex. “She set me up.”

Mich flashed a glance in her direction. “How so?”

“I told her about my visit to the shelter a while ago, so she dropped hints back at the hotel like bunker down, and we need to find shelter to jog my memory in case I forgot. She needed to get to the shelter to team up with Red, so she made it look like it was my idea.”

Mich considered her actions for a moment. “I suppose it’s all moot now.”

“I suppose so,” Lincoln begrudgingly admitted, “and it appears Big Red is superstitious.”

“What makes you say that?”

While Lex and Dallas were both distracted trying to keep a sure footing on the slippery ground, Lincoln casually directed Mich’s gaze to the bulge in Dallas’s leggings pocket. As she stepped over the fallen debris, she unconsciously rubbed at her pocket again.

“I don’t get it,” Mich shrugged. “What am I supposed to see?”

“When she helped Lex up off the floor back at the shelter, a red bag fell from her pocket.”

“I remember. It looked like a marble pouch. So? She plays marbles. She’s probably crazy. Hey, after shooting me and her unarmed boss, I wouldn’t be surprised if she had a leather-clad sex slave in a basement somewhere.”

“That little purse isn’t a marble pouch.”

“Then what is it?”

“A Mojo bag.
