Chapter Thirteen

Storm

I had her in my arms, and for the first time in my life, I felt like my words mattered to someone. Like I actually made a difference. Zoe was looking at me like she trusted me, and I wasn’t sure if I deserved her trust.

Sure, I didn’t owe her anything, but I didn’t want to disappoint her.

Buzz interrupted us. I was glad he showed up.

“I’ve been working on locating Daniel’s phone,” he said.

Zoe pulled away from me. She looked embarrassed that somebody had caught us embracing.

“Yeah, and?”

“Nothing. I haven’t found a fuckin’ thing.”

Zoe and I exchanged looks.

“Right now, we need to focus on locating Alison and hope that the same people have Daniel,” I said.

“Yes, Alison might lead us to Daniel,” Buzz agreed.

I saw Teeny approaching us. He had a sheepish look in his eyes, and I hoped, for his sake, this wasn’t about Amber.

“What is it?” I growled at him when he came closer.

“I just got off the phone with a guy. One of my contacts on the streets,” he said.

Zoe looked at me quizzically. She really had no clue how this network worked, but I didn’t have time to explain it to her.

“Do you have a lead or are you wasting my time?”

Teeny rubbed the back of his neck.

“I think I have something, boss,” he replied. “One of the cars that was on the video from the surveillance tapes, the registration number that was hazy—”

“I did the best I could with what I had. The car was too far to get a clear number,” Buzz chipped in.

“I got my contact to run the plates through his system. He said the car popped up in Phoenix,” Teeny continued.

“You’re saying the car is in Phoenix right now?” I asked.

“Yeah, boss, that’s what my contact said.”

I could sense Zoe’s eyes on me. When I turned to her, she was still staring at me. I knew what she was thinking. She wanted to go to Phoenix. That was where she believed her sister was.

But I wasn’t about to let her go to Phoenix.

“I’ll go check it out myself,” I said.

“I’ll come with you,” she chimed in immediately.

“You’re staying here. You’re not going anywhere until I know what we’re dealing with.” I glared into her eyes to make sure she knew I meant every word.

Zoe crossed her arms, standing firm with her legs parted.

“I know Phoenix. I went to school there. I have contacts. Trust me, you’ll need me there.”

I worked best when I worked alone. The last thing I needed was a distraction, especially in the form of a woman whose clothes I wanted to rip off.

“I’m taking my bike. Are you sure you still want to come?” I asked.

“We can take my car,” she said with a shrug.

“I am taking my bike.”

Zoe’s nostrils flared. Obviously, she didn’t like being told what to do, but neither did I.

“Okay, fine, let’s do it,” she replied.
