CHAPTER THIRTY-FOUR
I could see as I turned the corner and started to jog that he was just standing there, looking after me. He looked like a sad old man, and I felt a jolt of satisfaction.
The bastard who had bullied us, abused us, might be out and free, but he looked like shit, and I wasnât sure the grey skin was just prison pallor. Maybe he has terminal cancer or something and feels like heâs on some kind of redemption mission. But then Iâve seen a lot of old addicts, the ones that mix their pleasures. It eats away at them, giving their skin that death tinge.
The last time I ever saw Lily her lips were almost blue, and her eyes said she had given up. Whatever sheâd been putting in her body for all those years was finally killing her from the inside out. But Lily tried so hard to get better. Evan, on the other hand, can fucking die as soon as possible, and in as much pain as possible, for all I care.
He even said sorry! I gave a snort of laughter as I ran up the steps to my flat. Not fucking likely. The man was evil as they come back in the day, and I donât believe heâs changed. No, there was another reason he was dragging me along with him, and soon I would find out what games he was playing and beat him at them.
I grabbed a bottle from the fridge and sank into my sofa, leaning back and closing my eyes. Too many memories were flooding my brain. I could hear the questions again. Constant, probing questions from everyone.
The reports suggest the abuse was more widespread than the four of you? That potentially Evan might have been involved in a child sex ring?
No way. I can still feel the squirming rush of fear, the colour in my cheeks as I shook my head, my hair falling forward to hide my burning face, but I answered the question. I always answered the bloody questions.
That was in the vans, and I know Evan owned the scrapyard, but he just let them do what they wanted as long as they paid good money for the vans. I never saw Evan with the girls or anything and he wasnât into all that. With him, it was the control, and he liked hitting us. Like, he actually enjoyed it. When he wasnât beating us, he would be online, gaming, or shouting at the teenagers working in the scrapyard, strutting around with his chest out, the wanker. He often said he wanted to do to us what he was doing online, all the torture and that, the killing. He loved it. Especially the death bit.
They tried to do it well, to make sure we knew we were protected, but it was tough. I remember faces leaning towards me, eyes examining, judging, concluding. I felt like a lab rat, and I felt like my whole self, my soul and my body, was on display for everyone to draw their own conclusions.
