Chapter Ten

“Killed Shanna?” Levi repeated in disbelief.

Seth had gone deathly white and appeared to be fighting for each breath. He stood with his hands on top of the desk for support, his mouth a tight line, his eyes dark and filled with pain. When he finally spoke, his voice raw with anguish, his words fell as hard and heavy as stones. “Alex murdered her eight years ago. Now it seems he’s out of prison. And, no doubt, out after me.”

“What do you mean, after you?” she asked, trying to make sense of what he was saying. “You don’t think he’s the one we’re running from?”

Seth didn’t answer.

Levi stared at him. She’d just assumed Shanna had broken Seth’s heart and that was the source of his pain. But now she realized it was much more than that. “Seth, what’s going on?”

He shook his head. “It’s a long story.”

“Then give me the abbreviated version.”

He studied her for a lengthy moment. “Not here,” he said finally, and headed for the door.

Levi followed, in shock. Shanna dead. Murdered. Another piece of the Seth puzzle. But she knew the main pieces were still missing. And she wasn’t sure which ones she wanted most. The one that explained why Seth thought this killer was now after them? Or the one that told her just what Shanna had meant to him?

As Levi passed the spilled file cabinet, she glanced down. A name on one of the folders caught her eye. She scooped it up off the floor and followed Seth out.

Seth drove them away from Wally’s office and out of town, headed south. Levi saw a sign. Yellowstone Park 52 Miles. In the distance, she could see where the mountains opened in rocky bluffs and river bottom. Another valley, this one larger and longer, opened just beyond.

“Where are we going?” she asked, afraid his latest plan was to run from his past again, just as he’d no doubt done eight years ago when he’d ended up in Texas. She was afraid where they’d end up this time. But more than anything, she was afraid to hear what he had to tell her. “Mexico is nice this time of year.”

He glanced over at her then, some of the color coming back into his face. “I thought we’d go someplace a little closer. Carter’s Bridge.”

“Are we planning to jump?”

“Maybe,” he said, and turned onto East River Road. Just past the bridge, he turned into a fishing access site. It was empty of other vehicles. Seth parked and got out. She followed him down to the river’s edge, knowing he was finally going to tell her about Shanna, about his past and what had made him leave Montana eight years ago. Isn’t that what she’d wanted? Suddenly she wasn’t so sure.

She realized she liked Seth. Actually, had grown rather fond of him over the past seventeen hours—all physical attraction and reaction aside.

When Seth sat down on the lee side of a large boulder, she sat next to him and looked out at the water.
