Chapter Fourteen

Sin Montero

When my phone rang, it was almost four pm. I saw Lucas’s name on the screen and my heart did a flip.

“Hey, Lucas,” I said, maybe a bit too excited.

“Sin, glad I caught you. We just got back to the City,” Lucas said. “You said you wanted to talk?”

I flinched, but good thing he couldn’t see it. “Actually, I was hoping to talk to Carter Conti about something. It’s, um…personal.”

A second of silence. “Oh.” The sound of the phone moving made me push mine away from my ear for a second. “She wants to talk to you,” I heard Lucas say. Then:

“This is Carter.”

“Hi, Carter. Sorry to call like this out of the blue, but could we meet? I need to talk to you.”

Carter didn’t need to think about it. “Sure. Meet me at the south entrance of the Shade in half an hour.”

I threw my fist in the air. “I’ll be there,” I said and hung up. “Alora!”

Alora was in the bathroom taking a shower. We got dressed in record time, woke Kit up from his chocolate box, and were out the door in ten minutes.

We expected Moira, or someone else from the Bane, to be right outside the building or somewhere close when we walked out, but there was nobody there.

“Maybe they’re taking a break?” Alora asked.

“I don’t know.” But something told me that wasn’t it.

The fight with Damian last night played in my mind. Had I overdone it?

Probably. It would make sense that he wouldn’t want to keep guard at my apartment after that. Which was fine—it was what I’d wanted.

“It’s fine. They’re probably around here and will find us in no time,” I told Alora. I was just overthinking it—just like I did with everything else when it came to Damian. It was fine. “I think it would be a better idea if you hid in my shadow while I talk to Carter. He’s a werewolf and he was at the house. There’s a chance he smelled you in that room, and I don’t want him to know about what happened—just in case.”

I might have been going to ask for his help, but I still didn’t know Carter Conti at all.

“It’s okay,” Alora said. “I don’t mind. Just call me when you get something, okay?”

“Of course.”

We crossed the street and hid in an alley only for a second until Alora disappeared. She was now in my shadow, and to the outside world, I was on my own, with only Kit walking a few feet behind me.

I took another look around the street, hoping to see a familiar face. It almost felt like something was wrong, but I knew it was just my imagination. Kit squeaked to tell me that I was standing in the middle of the street, staring like an idiot. I patted my thigh, and he climbed up my leg and onto my shoulder.

“Maybe I should give him a call later,” I told Kit. “You know, just to tell him what happened with Carter.
