James reached out unsteadily, to grab the slowly blurring wine glass from the coffee table. He raised it to his lips, only to find it empty. After blinking several times to restore visual clarity, he glanced over to Molly. A tight knot in his stomach told him he’d revealed more than he had intended.

She was standing at the window, staring out, and he watched her in silence for a few moments. Then, she spun around and smiled at him; she’d clearly been weeping. She sniffed and raised the back of her hand to her nose.

‘We rescued eight women that night, including Ruth. I’ve lost count of how many since.’

‘You’re a bloody hero,’ Molly said.

‘We’ve barely scratched the surface.’

There was a momentary pause, then Molly said: ‘Shall I get another bottle?’
