8: Lies and Truths

I got back down to the gym after Diana, as I'd expected. I didn't know this church nearly as well as she did considering she'd grown up in the place. There definitely had to be a shortcut or some other way to get down here to the gym that I didn't know about.

When I walked up to her there was a look of concern on her face, and I worried for a moment that there was something on my face that betrayed the confusing roiling mix of emotions threatening to overwhelm me.

"Where were you? What took you so long up there?" she asked.

No, I guess it wasn't that my confused state was obvious. She was just wondering what the hell I'd been up to. It was almost enough to make me shake my head. She'd probably got down here a few minutes ahead of me at best, and she was trying to make it seem like she'd been back here for awhile and annoyed at me for not being back judging by the tone of her voice. I couldn't believe it!

"I think the real thing I should be asking is what took you so long?" I asked.

"What are you talking about? I've been here for…"

"Down here for awhile, eh?" I asked. "I suppose it would go a lot faster checking that one room if you had help…"

Her face suddenly went pale. She looked at me with an unreadable expression. Her eyes moved back and forth searching my own. It was obvious she was trying to figure out how much I knew, as though I could be any more obvious then I'd just been!

"What are you talking about?" she asked. "I was up there alone…"

It took every ounce of my control to school my expression to something halfway neutral. I couldn't believe it. She was actually trying to play it off like she was up there alone. I'd given her one hell of an opening to come clean, and she was still trying to get around it!

"Oh nothing honey," I said.

I put an arm around her, and I couldn't help but think about how Ben's arms had been around her just moments ago. How his hands had been running all over her body. And I had to quickly move away from that train of thought, because there was a very real danger that I was going to get another hard on and that the last place I wanted something like that to happen was in the middle of the church gym where there were so many witnesses.

I searched around the gym for a moment before finding Ben. He was over with his niece laughing and smiling. Acting like he didn't have a care in the world. He glanced over towards us once, but it was a quick glance. As though he was looking around the room. If I hadn't been searching his face so intently I might've missed how he stopped for the briefest of moments on Diana before moving on.
