Chapter Twelve

Jorja stayed at Amy’s house the second night, too, so she was there when the police officer came on Wednesday morning.

“Have you found them?” Mrs. Nordlund asked, when she opened the door and saw Detective Rockport.

“No, but the kidnapper mailed a DVD to the Edgertons. I brought a copy for you to watch. Do you have a DVD player?”

“Yes.”

“The package was postmarked Olympia, so we know that they went south.”

As Mrs. Nordlund, Jorja, and Detective Rockport watched the video, Jorja stared at Amy, wondering how this could be happening. How could her best friend be missing? Who had made this DVD? Where was Amy?

When it got to the part about Aunt Cara and Uncle Van, Mrs. Nordlund said, “Wait a minute.” The officer hit pause. “Amy doesn’t have an Aunt Cara or an Uncle Van,” she said.

“It’s a clue!” Jorja said. “She’s trying to tell us something!”

Detective Rockport played that part again. This time it continued, and Amy said, “And also Mrs. White.”

“I don’t know a Mrs. White, either,” Mrs. Nordlund said. She turned to Jorja. “Do you? Is there someone at school named Mrs. White? A teacher? Does Amy have a friend whose mother is Mrs. White?”

Jorja shook her head. “I don’t know anyone named White,” she said.

“Maybe when this video gets played on TV,” Mrs. Nordlund said, “someone will recognize the background. It looks like an old house. There might be some distinctive mark.”

“We won’t be releasing this to the media,” Detective Rockport said.

“But don’t you want as many people as possible to see it? It would help them recognize Amy and Kendra.”

“I think Jorja’s correct,” Detective Rockport replied. “By talking about people who don’t exist, Amy is trying to send us information. The kidnapper obviously didn’t catch on, but it would be easy for some investigative reporter to discover that there is no Aunt Cara or Uncle Van, and make a big deal out of it. I can almost hear the news clips: ‘Kidnapped Girl Sends Clues to Cops.’ The kidnapper is probably watching the news reports and reading the papers. It wouldn’t be good if he or she knows Amy is trying to outsmart him.”

“Cara. Van. White,” Jorja said.

“I think she’s telling us what kind of vehicle to look for,” the officer said.

“Of course!” Mrs. Nordlund said. “A white Caravan!” Detective Rockport nodded. “That’s right.”

Goose bumps rose on Jorja’s arms. Amy had thought of a way to let the police know what kind of vehicle the kidnapper had! How smart was that? Jorja wanted to holler, “You go, girl!” and give Amy a big high five.

They watched the video two more times but didn’t notice anything else that might be useful.

“You’ll need to keep this information to yourself,” Detective Rockport warned. “It’s crucial that nobody else finds out that Amy sent a message. If we can keep this secret so that the kidnapper doesn’t figure out what Amy is doing, she may send another clue in the next DVD.”

“I won’t tell anyone,” Jorja promised.
