Identity and organisation
Here, too, there is a lack of clarity. Shamil Basayev, a known Chechen guerrilla leader, took responsibility for the attack. His âbrigade of martyrsâ carried out the attack, which he admitted had gone off the rails and not achieved the desired result. Strong aspirations for Chechen independence have repeatedly collided with âGreater Russiaâ interests in the region, leading to two bloody wars. According to Russian media, the attackers were instead linked to Al-Qaida, and the majority of them were Arabic. It is obvious that Russia was interpreting the attack as part of the international Islamic terror (the âjihadâ) rather than an expression of local dissatisfaction and the struggle for ethnic liberty.
The group that carried out the attack was certainly composed of various nationalities. The leader was called âPolkovnikâ (âColonelâ in Russian) by the other members. The group also included a Russian man called âFantomasâ. Miraculously, he succeeded in disappearing. Two of the group members were women. In total, 32 terrorists participated, according to the Russian authorities. All of them had high heroin, methamphetamine and morphine levels in their blood. According to Basayev (who claimed responsibility for the attack), Russia had planted a security operative in the group to feed them information. One recurring accusation is that the Russian government fabricated the attack to discredit Chechnya. Russian participation seems far-fetched (even though this would explain the complicated aftermath as âRussian suppression of the factsâ). The terrorists are said to have made demands for full freedom and national status for Chechnya, but Russian negotiators disagree with this version. The majority of the hostages were schoolchildren and school staff (primarily teachers).
