Felix watched her go.

He knew why Cara didn’t go away to university and although he didn’t agree with her decision he loved her all the more for it. And it was true that he thought she should have more of a social life, but she’d always been a little tongue-tied until she got to know people better. Like father, like daughter …

On the spur of the moment he’d used Cara as an excuse to ask Evie Benson to sit with him. He saw her in the department of course but there were always other people around, and no time to talk about anything other than work.

He’d first seen her at that drinks party, laughing, brown curls falling over her face, and for the first time in years felt a jolt of attraction. But when they were introduced he looked into her beautiful dark blue eyes and thought, there’s no way she’ll be on her own.

However, some judicious questions – and her staff file – led him to think that she didn’t have a significant other. He was so out of practice though at the dating scene, at interpreting signals … He thought there’d been a little spark in her eyes when he’d suggested they share a table, and they seemed to get on well although it was rather difficult to talk and eat at the same time.

Then he’d tried to take it one step further and ask her if she’d like to – well, he wanted to ask her out for a drink but then panicked that perhaps that would have been too out-of-the-blue. So instead he’d frantically tried to remember if their schedules were compatible enough for him to suggest that they might have lunch together here tomorrow. He’d ended up gabbling, making a complete idiot of himself. She’d reeled back before he’d even finished the question.

And what he should have done first, he realised, his heart sinking, was to make clear that there was no woman currently in his life. Evie Benson would have got the wrong end of the stick when he told her he had a daughter …

He put his fork down, his appetite for the steak pie disappearing.

He’d never read Jane Austen himself but he’d watched film adaptations of her books and he was sure that she would think very little of Felix Davis’s potential to be a romantic hero.
