To be an early riser was the curse of every school teacher. At 6 a.m. Jenny was wide awake and ready for the day, whether she liked it or not.

She looked over to where Billy was sleeping beside her, his muscular form sprawled unselfconsciously across the covers. In the light of the dying fire she paused to admire how beautiful he was— like a classical sculpture come to life.

She hurried into an oversized sweatshirt and flannel pajama bottoms Billy had procured for her last night.

Last night before—

Her face flushed uncontrollably.

On soft feet she slipped out of bed and padded across the small apartment to the kitchen. She poked around the cupboards and found…

Nothing.

That was odd. She opened the refrigerator, and again found it empty.

The closets were bare, there wasn’t any garbage in the trash cans.

It was… odd.

Well, she reasoned to herself, perhaps he had just not had time to get settled in yet. After all, Mr. McAllister didn’t visit this estate very often, so clearly Billy hadn’t bothered to make himself at home yet.

Jenny made her way through the breezeway that connected the servants’ quarters to the main house and found her way through the maze-like mansion back to the kitchen.

As she put on the kettle and waited for the water to boil she poked around, trying to find something to eat.

“Bread, jam, cereal, eggs… anything?” She hummed a little tune to herself as she pulled out drawers and opened cupboards, coming up empty.

In one drawer, near a desk area set off to the side of the kitchen, Jenny found a manila folder that caught her eye. It caught her eye because it was labeled…

Jenny Albright.

Her brow furrowed, Jenny opened the folder.

The first page of the folder was a letter. She read it, her eyes widening with incomprehension and slowly growing anger as she did so.

Dear Mr. McAllister,

Enclosed please find the information you asked us to gather over the last year. Thank you for using our investigative services, we look forward to being of help to you in the future.

Flipping through the file Jenny was astonished to find pictures of herself, file clippings of school newsletters and emails to the parents of her students, school board proceedings, pictures of her house, her dog, her friends.

She felt sick. Her mind was racing. What possible motive…?

She closed the file quickly, turning to the one beneath it.

It was labeled Deep Haven Special Education Initiative. In the file folder she found pictures of her dilapidated school, floor plans, appraisal values and…

A sales contract, pending escrow.

The next pages had valuations of the land her school was on, as well as schematics for what the site would look like if a shopping mall was in its place.

The file was thick, but she couldn’t read anymore. Her hands were shaking, she was so upset. She closed it, pushing it away from her.

Why?

The question reverberated in her mind. WHY?
