Jason walked out of the station. He needed to get some fresh air. He didn’t want to leave the women, so he couldn’t go far. He had a strong urge for a cigarette. He’d picked up the habit in AIT, Advanced Individual Training, but managed to kick it a couple of years ago. The desire to go back to it now was more tempting than ever before. He filled his lungs with the cool night air, and continued his pacing in front of the station.

A short time later Claudia joined him. “I don’t think he found me helpful. I wasn’t back there nearly as long as you were.”

“Claudia, can I ask you something?” At her nodding, he continued, “Do you think I missed something, something important? Why would some random guy target Stella? And let’s face it, at six foot two, your dad isn’t a little guy, so why would the guy take the chance of Jim being able to overpower him? I don’t get it, am I missing something?”

“If only I could answer even one of those questions, Jase,” Claudia said. “I think the best thing we can do is follow my dad’s incessant advice and pray about it. I may not be much of a Christian, but if ever there was a time to turn to God, this is it.”

Many nights, I snuck out of my bedroom and hung out with the wild kids who did drugs, drank alcohol, and had sex. They enjoyed the idea of corrupting the preacher’s kid. I was tame compared to the group I was trying to emulate, but I got in plenty of trouble. The trouble with trouble is that it starts out as fun. Life is cruel. Stella shouldn’t be the one who ended up in this situation. I put myself in danger so many times, but she’s always tried to stay on the right side of things. The worst thing she ever did was run off to Daytona, but from what she’s told me, she didn’t even get in any real trouble there. She went to a club one time. I think she was always a good girl for Dad more than for God. Well, until recently. Her rebel streak didn’t last long, now she’s gone all holy roller on me. It’s as if she flicked a switch and changed.”

“I’ve only known her as a beautiful girl in love with the Lord. I fell for her first based on her physical beauty. She has an ethereal quality about her. I don’t know if it’s the pale skin, the brilliant red
