Ro picked up her phone. Before she could say a word, Maddie Wilson, sounding out of breath, told her, “The police were just here. They arrested my mother.”

“On what charge?” Ro’s response was loud, emotional. She’d spent the day getting updates from Catherine who had Remy’s apartment staked out. If the girl was there, she wasn’t answering the door. Ro was afraid she was gone, in the wind. Now this.

“They said for murder. Some guy named Hal.”

No, this can’t be happening. Where the hell is Remy? She looked at the clock. 4:55. She knew their timing was on purpose. They’d process her through quickly and have her in the lockup through the weekend before she’d be arraigned. “When did they leave with her?”

“Maybe five minutes ago. They’ve got warrants to go through the house now. They’re tearing the place up.”

“I’m sorry about that, but right now, my first concern is Pam. They’ll bring her downtown here to book her. It will take them a half hour or more in rush hour traffic to get her down here. I’ll be waiting for her when she comes out of booking.”

“Should I come down there?”

“Not to the police station, no. You won’t be able to see her. Don’t worry, I’m not going to leave her side. We’ll get to the bottom of this.”
