“There’s no way I’m allowing you to do this,” Allaite shouted at the High Councilor.

“How can you be sure it’s not a plot to kill you? I don’t care what they said; an I.U.M.

assassin doesn’t change his allegiance.”

Zalaigh let Allaite yell. They’d been friends and lovers for too many years for him not to know Allaite’s anger was really fear.

“It’s likely a trap.” Allaite paced.

“They’re lovers,” Zalaigh stated.

“What? How do you know?” Allaite glared at him.

“I saw the way the assassin watched Thaday, as if he were the only person in the assassin’s world. He touched him to give encouragement.” Zalaigh had seen desire, pride and love in the dark one’s face.

“That doesn’t mean they’re lovers,” Allaite muttered.

Zalaigh gave the other Mitcovian a smile. “It’s the way I look at you.”

Allaite sighed. “Tell me again why we’d agree to such a crazy plan?”

“Our protection is weakening. The I.U.M. is poised, waiting for the signal to invade.

I believe Thaday will take the stone and sell it if they don’t get to talk to the scientist.”

Zalaigh clutched the medallion he wore. The empty circle in the middle of the disc was where the Heart used to rest. “They know we’ll do anything to get the Heart back.”

Allaite knelt by his side, taking his free hand and kissing the palm. “Do you believe his story?”

“I wouldn’t put it past the I.U.M. to try and kill two birds with one small red stone. If they take our offer, Allaite, we get more than our treasure back. We get two very powerful allies in the process.”

Allaite frowned. “I understand about the assassin. Having a man like him as a friend is a smart plan, but what’s so special about the thief?”

Zalaigh tapped the vid screen, bringing up a captured picture of Thaday. “Look at his face.”

Allaite studied the thief’s face, but Zalaigh could tell his lover didn’t see it. “His eyes, my love.”

Zalaigh thought about the shock racing through his body when he first locked gazes with Thaday. He’d only seen eyes that color once when he was young.

“They’re like flames,” Allaite whispered.

Allaite shivered. He’d never seen eyes like Thaday’s but he’d heard legends about them and what they meant. He saw Zalaigh touch the vid screen with his fingertips.

“Yes. Amber eyes with fire buried in them. Rue Thaday is the most powerful man among us and more than likely he doesn’t even know it. If we can help him learn about his true power, maybe his gratitude will keep him here on Mitcov.” Zalaigh smiled down at him.

Allaite nodded, but his eyes strayed to the dark assassin standing behind Thaday.

Without the voice and movement, he could see what his lover had been talking about.

The assassin loved the thief.

“I think curing the assassin will give us the thief’s allegiance.”

“You’re right. Like any man in love, do something to keep his lover safe and he’ll be in debited to you for life.” Zalaigh’s gaze traced the lines of Thaday’s face.

Allaite wasn’t jealous.
