SEVEN

The Fae house appeared as abandoned as it had a few hours earlier, which was good because it would’ve been quite a pickle if the owner had suddenly decided to throw a party.

I watched Lockhart prepare his spell at the entrance of the big, round room at the end of the hallway, then moved to the windows to inhale the air and the view.

Greenie and Daggey came without fuss, and I gave them strict orders to stick to the outside and be ready to get inside if their help was needed. Daggey yawned widely, showing many small, sharp teeth, then jumped onto a branch outside the windows.

My favorite Fae hound stuck around, sniffing at the walls and the floor as if searching for the best spot for fast goo-portal travel. Now that was a good boy.

“You’re the best,” I told him, hugging his side. I didn’t even mind eating a mouthful of soil and leaves. Worth feeling his silent laughter reverberate against my chest.

“Does Greaves know you love that thing more than him?” Lockhart asked dryly.

“Aidan knows my love is infinite and can hold more than one being. Also, Greenie is not a thing. He’s an intelligent Fae hound more than capable of visiting your room while you sleep.”

Lockhart scowled at the hound.

Greenie licked his fangs.

I smiled in triumph.

The sorcerer returned to his spell and muttered, “Will this day never end?”

He would probably spend the rest of the week reinforcing all the wards in his bedroom. Or moving into the tenth floor of a hotel.

Once his spell was finished, he warned me that spells of this kind took a lot of magic, especially if the man fought it with another spell or artifact, so once it started, I needed to get my business of counter-blackmailing Auction Boss done fast.

After making sure I understood the consequences of a pissed-off Auction Boss with access to unknown artifacts and spells, Lockhart hid inside the first room to the right. His spell would warn him when someone stepped on it, but he wouldn’t know who—as per usual for Fae magic—so I also had to make sure not to go anywhere over it.

We agreed on “vitamins” as our safe word for stopping the freezing spell and settled in to wait. Lockhart in his room, me out of direct sight from the portal room. I wanted Auction Boss to have to walk into the room to face me—best way to get him to step onto the spell.

I wasn’t surprised when he didn’t attempt to catch us off-balance by arriving ahead of time—his demeanor in my office had spoken of complete confidence. He had to be, to lead such a complicated operation as a secret auction house.

The hallway flashed silver as the portal opened. A familiar clacking sound drifted into my ears, and I psyched myself up one last time.

You can do this, Maddie. You have all the power here.

The footsteps approached.

Clack, clack. “Eugh.” Thud.

Clack, clack, eugh, thud?

Frowning, I stepped closer to the hallway, then squeaked and jumped back.
