Twenty-Seven

CANDY

The crunch of the gravel ended where the road began. Soren pulled smoothly onto the paved streets, where only the moonlight guided us on the way to my cottage.

“Well that went well,” he sighed happily.

From the comfort of the passenger seat, I chuckled low. “Ya think?”

The remainder of the evening had been a whirlwind of activity, of parents and children eating and laughing and having a fantastic time. By now though, it was almost midnight. The prizes had been awarded, the accolades given out, the uneaten popcorn and discarded wrappers swept from the field in front of the Inn.

The first night of the faire was in the books.

“I can’t believe we drew such a crowd,” Soren noted. “With the Oktoberfest running it’s biggest weekend, I figured they’d siphon off half the town.”

“Different demographics,” I said simply. “That place might have a few bounce houses scattered here and there, but appeals mostly to the adults looking to get bombed. The faire you threw tonight appeals to families and children. A whole different animal.”

He nodded numbly, absorbing my words. “So we’re not even in competition,” he breathed.

“Nope. And that’s good, because it means you can do this year after year.”

I saw him settle even further into his seat, easing his grip on the wheel. He’d been nervous, I could tell. They’d spent a lot of money making the place nice, with no guarantee it would ever pay off. Now that it was successful, he could finally relax.

“So we’re all sold out of your pies,” my lover noted proudly. “First night.”

He didn’t have to tell me, I’d already noticed. In fact, I’d taken great pride in the achievement.

“That’s okay,” I said. “I’ll bake more pies. Maybe some cookies and brownies too.”

He turned to look at me, his handsome face even more beautiful in the dim half-light. There was gratitude and admiration in his stark blue eyes. And maybe even something else.

“Anyone ever tell you that you totally fucking rock?”

“Occasionally, yeah.”

“Well you do.”

He slid an arm around me, pulling me over. The old Bronco he drove had bench seating. It enabled me to cuddle up against his hard body, right into a space that seemed molded to fit just me.

“How’d you end up with the Inn, anyway?” I asked, stretching my tired legs. “I never asked.”

“It belonged to a friend of my father,” he answered. “Tristan and I always loved the place, probably because we went fishing down by the creek as kids. We always joked about buying the place, taking it over. As we got older, that seemed more and more plausible.”

He pulled me tighter against him as his fingers began twirling my hair. I wasn’t sure he realized he was doing it, but I loved it all the same.

“Anyway, the place had been failing for a long while. That part was no secret. It was almost in foreclosure when we had enough for the down payment, so the old man was happy to get a check from us.”

“So you bought a failing business,” I chuckled.
