At 8:00 p.m. sharp, he walked into Bacchanalia. He saw Mrs. Buford and Mai at a table in the center of the room. Mr. Buford wasnât anywhere to be seen. Brandyn walked up to the table. He heard Mai speaking to Millicent.
âNot Brandyn, he makes it a gift, you receive his absolute attention before, during, and after. I felt like the most desired woman in the world. What can I say? I gave it up on the first night, like a Catholic school girl.â
What a review!
He was surprised Mai shared their intimate night with the old lady, but as Mai always inadvertently managed to do, she solidified his standing in Millicentâs eyes.
âLadies, good evening, what a magnificent table. Someone must have some pull around here. Mai, you look lovely, and so do you, Mrs. Buford. Do we need security?â
He gave Mai a kiss on the cheek and laid a hand on Millicentâs crusty shoulder.
âDidnât you bring, Mr. Buford? Am I to believe I get the two of you to myself this evening?â
Millicentâs cheeks turned a darker color of frost gray.
âGood evening, Brandyn, so nice to see you again. Portend is in the menâs room. His prostate has been giving him trouble lately. He was supposed to go and see his doctor about it, but he keeps putting it off.â
She said it as if it was an old argument won and lost. Interesting news to Brandyn.
He has cancer.
âYou couldnât handle the two of us Iâm afraid, so I brought Portend along,â Millicent said.
Mai had dressed a bit edgy. The sweater dipped lower. The skirt higher. Her hair was in a French-twist, another noticeable change. Millicent was wrapped up to her chin in gauze dress. If it wound any higher, she could have easily been mummified. She wore jewelry from a past era, museum pieces. Smooth would have turned them down. She wore old lady perfume. He sat across from her, so he could be next to Portend who walked up to the table.
âI waited in there long enough, but I guess you all decided to stay anyway.â he said.
The remark distressed Millicent.
âBrandyn, how are you this evening? You both look great, especially you, Mai.â
âThank you, Portend, you are so charming!â
She gave a gracious, Southern-peach smile.
âItâs easy if youâre twenty-seven-years-old to be gorgeous, but it doesnât last forever, Portend.â
âCome on, Mill, Iâm just trying to help you with your match-making.â
Mai bobbed, and Brandyn weaved. He pictured Mill stabbing Portend with her fork. Brandyn called the waiter over.
âYouâre looking good yourself, Mr. Buford, and both ladies look ravishing.â
He hated when old, married couples bitched and moaned about their million-year relationships. It was another reason he never wanted to get married.
âOh, donât mind me, Brandyn, I have cancer up my butt, damn prostate!â
The rest of the night was cordial. Mai provided the entertainment with stories about Tumor no one else knew. Brandyn told more flying stories because they excited the old man. He was aware Millicent desperately wanted him to settle down with Mai. He waited for Portend to bring up the tour.
