CHAPTER 41

Emma

It was stupid, right?

Logically, I was fully aware that I was overreacting to the fact that Emily and Cade were basically BFFs.

Okay, that was an exaggeration. I knew they weren’t best friends, let alone friends to begin with, but the sudden onslaught on this uncovered information related to someone who was so deeply connected to Tyler and what he did to me had me seeing red.

I was crying uncontrollably, ridiculously so. But I couldn’t help it. Cade meant everything to me.

Hell, I fucking loved him. He didn’t know that, though. And he never would, because I have been seriously out of line over the past few months thinking otherwise. Damn it, I was an idiot. My mind was reeling, convoluted with all the thoughts of what I still didn’t know about him.

I ran toward the ocean, deciding to get in the water and force my mind to release everything I was holding on to. I was going to cry it out in that ocean, where no one else could hear me or see the tears.

So, I just kept going, willing my legs to move faster and refusing to acknowledge my friends around me. I let one foot fall in front of the othe—

Cade’s strong, weighted arms fell around me, gripping and yanking me backward so quickly I lost balance and came crashing down to the sand against him. One of his arms was stretched underneath my neck, grasping my shoulder while the other laid across my waist. I had an incredibly distant and vague sense of deja vu, but it stayed hidden in the depths of my mind as confusion took over.

I looked up, trying to catch reigns on my surroundings and what had happened when I noticed Cade’s eyes were looking straight at me, but were completely empty and distant.

“Cade?” I said as I sat up and pulled myself out of his arms.

The rest of our small group rushed over as Sav dropped down next to me and pulled me against her. “What the hell, Emma? You could have been killed! We were just in the damn hospital with you, don’t you dare make us do that again.” I could tell Sav was beyond angry with me for something I didn’t understand just yet.

But my mind whipped back to Cade as I turned to look at him again. The same, distant expression lingered on his face as his hands returned to grip me, holding on to me so tightly that I felt like he wouldn’t let go.

“Cade, it’s me. What’s going on?” I urged him, tilting my face so it was directly in line with his eyes.

Slowly, his vision cleared and he focused on me, his breathing becoming rapid as he mentally came back to reality. Suddenly, his eyes sharpened and focused on me with a rage that I practically felt burn directly through my skin. I leaned back just slightly, instinctively confused and worried for a moment when I abruptly felt both of his hands release and lift to grip the sides of my face.
