CHAPTER FIFTEEN

As Cora and Baker were climbing from the helicopter, Virgil asked Mok if he could give Rosencrantz a ride back to Elliott’s house to monitor the situation there.

“Sure thing,” Mok said.

Rosencrantz caught on right away and tossed the keys of his squad car to his boss.

“Thanks, Rosie. I’ll get it back to you when we’re done here.”

“No problem,” Rosencrantz said.

As the two men were driving away, Cora and Baker walked over, and Virgil noticed that Cora’s eyes held a reddish cast.

Murton looked at his brother and said, “Want me to come in with you?”

“No, I got it.”

Cora skipped the pleasantries—not that she offered them up much anyway…unless she was at a fundraiser—and said, “Where is he?”

Virgil turned to her and said, “C’mon, I’ll take you.”

Cora slipped her hand into the crook of Virgil’s elbow as he led her inside the hospital. It was an oddly intimate act on Cora’s part, and Virgil, in a somewhat rare moment of grace, managed to keep his mouth shut about it.

Murton watched them go, then turned to Baker. “How was the flight?”

Baker shook her head. “Somehow managed to survive it.”

“How about the boss?”

“Same answer,” Baker said, a dollop of sorrow in her voice. Then, because Baker really was tough as nails, she put the sorrow away and pointed at Virgil and Cora as they approached the hospital’s entrance.

“Is Jonesy wearing Louboutin’s?”

“Yeah,” Murton said. “He didn’t even realize it until I told him.”

Baker subconsciously reached down and adjusted the pistol on her hip. “I’d kill for a pair of those.”
