Chapter 7

The funny thing was that as soon as I saw Antigone I found I missed acting. Much as I enjoyed Anna’s performance and took pride in it, I found myself wondering how I would have done it differently.

Of course when I thought about it seriously, in those dark moments before falling asleep, I knew I really didn’t want to go back to the drudgery I’d just escaped from. Granted there was an occasional Kampbell Kids script where I was featured, and those had been fun, but for the most part I just had to screech, “Mom, he’s teasing me again!” and that was that. Scripts like Mary’s Story didn’t come along every day. I’d been lucky to get that role; there was no guarantee I’d ever be offered another one that good.

Besides, I reminded myself, I liked my life the way it was. I still got a kick going to a real school with real teachers and real students. I liked being part of a crowd. I liked having kids come over after school; I liked the phone calls. And even if I wasn’t dating, there was always Peter to talk to, Peter to enjoy.

Really, I told myself, if I added up all the pluses and all the minuses in my life, there were a lot more pluses. And the minuses that there were might be changed at any moment. After all Andy had asked me out once, he might always do it again. I was living the life I’d fantasized about for more years than I could remember. I had a real family, real friends. My time was my own. I was no longer a freak, outside looking in. And if I missed acting, well, that was to be expected. You can’t give up something you’ve been doing forever and not expect to miss it occasionally.

So there I was, optimistic that total adjustment was just around the corner, when Barry Cooper called.

“Barry!” I cried, delighted to hear his voice. “Where are you?”

“In New York,” he said. “I’m in town for meetings with some producers, so before I left L.A. I called your agent and got your number. How are you, kid?”

“I’m fine,” I said. “Oh, I’d love to see you.”

“Why do you think I called?” he said. “What do you want to do? Come into the city and start the rumor mongers going? I bet it’s been awhile since you’ve been in a gossip column.”

I’d never been in a gossip column, except once when I had my tonsils removed, and he knew it. “You could come out here,” I said. “Experience Americana firsthand. And have a home-cooked meal. I bet you’re still much too skinny.”

“Slender,” he said. “Lean. Never skinny. Does your mother still make that great lasagna?”

“Are you kidding?” I said. “She’s a housewife now. She does nothing but cook and clean all day.”

“Great,” Barry said. “Maybe not for her, but it sounds wonderful to me. I’m free tomorrow night.”

That’s what I’d always liked about Barry, his directness.
