Chapter 39
Naya
It was silly, but I couldnât keep my eyes off my shoes.
After Iâd gazed lovingly at them for the thirtieth time since Iâd sat down for lunch with my parents in my home guild, Ama cocked an eyebrow. âYou and your obsession with shoes.â
I startled. âIâm not obsessed with shoes. I just really like them.â
âHoney, youâre obsessed.â
Okay. Maybe I was, but the reason I couldnât stop staring at this pair was because they were so meâunlike the jeans and black T-shirt that couldâve been anyone and everyone.
Where Ama was chirpy as always, Apa had barely said a word since landing in the New York guild after Iâd texted him that my schedule had cleared up and I was free for lunch. Guilt-ridden as I was about my undercover mission, Iâd barely held his gaze.
My parents were so perceptive that I once asked Ama if the ascended possessed X-ray vision that allowed them to look straight into souls. Sheâd laughed it off and guaranteed that no one, not even seraphim, could see through flesh and bone.
âWhy are you so skinny?â he finally asked.
Ama cocked her head to the side. âHuh. You do look like youâve lost a little weight.â
I tugged at the hem of my T-shirt, suddenly worried theyâd get a glimpse of my mottled abdomen. âI just havenât had much of an appetite.â
âWhy?â Apaâs eyes had turned a frightening shade of teal.
The geometric petals on my sneakers went a little hazy as I evaluated how to best answer that question. âIâve justââ
A ball of lime-green fur streaked through the cafeteria and leaped straight onto Apaâs lap.
Awesome timing, Nitznootz. I reached over and scratched the haccoul behind his tiny, perky ears.
âNaya?â One-track-minded father of mine.
I shifted in my seat. âMy sinnerâs surprisingly harder to reform than I initially thought. Not to mention she joined this humanitarian organization in Venezuela, and I guess what with relocating to Caracas, my mind has been on other things than food.â
Even though I kept my gaze locked on the purring creature in my fatherâs lap, I could feel my parents eyeing each other, then me, then each other again.
Ama finally sighed. âTobiasâs son reformed her right before you did. Maybe we can ask him how he went about achieving it.â
âJust took him two months to do it,â Apa grumbled.
âMaybe he wasnât in a hurry.â I realized, only after I said it, that jumping to Adamâs defense may look suspicious. After all, my parents still werenât aware that I knew him, and the last thing I wanted was for them to learn about it. So I added, âMost fletchings arenât in a hurry to reach Elysium. I mean, look at Ama. She used up all her allotted time.â I wanted to pat myself on the wing for how subtly Iâd slid the spotlight over.
Ama held out a green bean to Nitznootz who gobbled it right down. âI did. Almost paid for it dearly though.â
Apaâs lips flexed, the memory of how close the love of his eternal life had been to failing still fresh in his mind.
