“Hello, Hawke.” Star walked over to the right side of the bed. The side that her mom’s unseeing eyes were turned towards. “How are you doing?”

After the laundry was done and she’d said bye to Malena, Star had decided to visit Hawke. Her mother was still in the hospital and less verbal than ever. Star didn’t think Hawke could even see her anymore. But something had still pulled her back to the hospital. To her mother.

She knows I’m here, right? Star needed to believe that.

“The doctor says your condition hasn’t changed.” She stroked strands of hair off of Hawke’s forehead. “Are you gonna die on me?”

Hawke had no answers for her.

“I met a girl, Mom.” Star sat down next to her. “You’d hate her. Not a big drinker. No drugs. Careful. And definitely not sexually liberated.” And I’ve already fallen for her, hard. How pathetic am I? “And your daughter is slowly but surely being lured away from the wide path of depravity. You really wouldn’t approve.”

Star couldn’t help to remember the never-ending parade of men and women her mom had brought home over the years. The parties. How old had Star been the first time her mother smoked pot around her? Probably less than five. She’d never even had a chance to be normal. Anger rose within her and she forced air out of her lungs.

“Miss Ciel?” There was a nurse in the doorway. “Visiting hours are almost over.”

“That’s fine.” Star got up. “I was done here anyway.” Before she left, she took a deep breath and forced herself to calm down. She wouldn’t leave in anger. “See you soon, Mom.” She brushed a few more hairs off of Hawke’s forehead.
