Chapter 2: Mother’s Warning

Lady Gaga buzzed inside his pocket. David set his fork down so that he could check caller id. He unconsciously wiped his mouth with his napkin before answering.

“Hey, Mom.”

“Hey, sweetie,” his mother’s voice was filled with joy, “How are things going?”

David’s mom had checked on him just a few days ago. He was a pretty overprotective parent, especially considering David only lived a few miles away.

When his husband died, David’s mother had grown super attached to David. He had been pretty sad and reluctant to see David go off to college. David had told his mother to call him every Saturday. It was Thursday.

Despite feeling frustrated, David smiled softly.

“Great.”

His mother had a second sense when it came to anything troubling David.

“What’s the matter? You sound upset.”

David didn’t even humor the idea of lying to him. His mother wasn’t easily fooled and David was a terrible liar.

“It’s not a big deal.”

“Honey,” his mother said shortly, “You know I won’t be able to sleep well at night if I thought something bad was happening to you.”

Just like Will, his mother was using emotional manipulation. But David could forgive him for that, since unlike Will, his mother actually cared for him.

David licked his lips nervously and confessed what was going on. His mother listened in silence, not responding for a while even after he was done. Finally, he spoke up.

“Wasn’t he that Pierce fellow? The one that broke Karen’s heart?”

Karen Sagget had been David’s childhood friend whom he had lost touch with after high school. She was an omega that had been infatuated with Will. But when he went on to the next omega, it broke her spirit. By that time David had already adopted his non-anger philosophy, so he didn’t say anything against him.

But David’s mother had been pissed off. Karen had been his favorite friend of David’s. Seeing her so emotionally distraught prompted him to take her to the movies as a way of easing the pain. But he would’ve marched up to Will’s house and cursed him out if David hadn’t talked him out of it.

“Yes.”

“Listen to me. You stay away from that man. You know what he wants. Don’t give it to him. He’s a terrible excuse for a human being.”

“Come on, Mom. You should know me better than that. Of course I won’t let myself be taken advantage of.”

A short pause echoed through the phone line, as if his mother was thinking the best way to respond.

“It’s not that I don’t trust you to take care of yourself. It’s Will. I think he’s more dangerous than you know.”

“What do you mean dangerous?”

His mother never called Will dangerous before. Sure, he called him a jerk, bully, coward, and a pervert, but never dangerous. Did he know about the rumors surrounding Will?

“He has a lot of friends. And they’ve been running this town to the ground while you were away.”

David laughed because that was the only way he could respond to this. His mother’s words were as unsettling as they were shocking.
