Writing Part Four: Get On Your Feet
Itâs called stand-up comedy, so letâs get up and on our feet. By now, you have material that has been reviewed and whittled down on paper. Youâve taken writing exercises, learned performance technique, so itâs time to get into full practice mode.
Take your material and find a room in your home that has a full-length mirror. You will need your phone or another recording device, and something to act as a microphone. If you own an actual microphone, by all means, use that. If not, you can improvise by using a water bottle or pen to take the place of a microphone. The primary purpose of the mirror is to make sure you are keeping the microphone close to your lips.
Hit record on your audio device, look at your first joke, and then deliver it to the mirror while holding your microphone or makeshift mic. Once you reach the punchline, hold for the laughter to practice that habit, and then look at your next joke. Deliver that to the mirror again, and so on, until you have delivered all of your jokes. Hit stop on your recording device, look at yourself in the mirror, and pay yourself an encouraging compliment.
Take your written jokes and audio recording device to a table to review. This can be difficult to hear yourself, but if used effectively, it can be a huge learning tool. As you examine your material while listening to the audio, you will come to understand what needs polishing and what wording needs cutting. Rewrite what isnât landing properly and cross out anything superfluous. Listen on repeat until you have made all of the appropriate adjustments.
