"Where's Dock? Did he get the record this morning? You gonna start celebrating early?"

"Dock couldn't make it."

"You're bleeding, honey," she said.

"Mmmmm." And then I sat down at the bar. And I looked all around the room.

Nothing had changed. Nothing ever changes in a whorehouse, really.

"Let me fix your hand, honey."

I finally got her in full focus. "No. What I want is, I want a bottle of Seagram's Seven Crown. Have you got that?"

"A whole bottle?"

"Goddam, Ida, do I lisp when I talk? A whole bottle."

"All right," she said. And she plunked it down. "And get me Laurie."

"She's asleep and . . ." But she looked at me again and nodded. "I'll get her right away, honey."

I was looking over the rim of the glass at the stairway when she came down. "Hi," she said.

"Hi, yerself."

"What's wrong, Stroke? You don't look good." "Mmmm hmmm."

"And your hand. Honey, your hand is all. . ." I poured some more and held the glass up to the light and looked through it at Laurie. "Stay with me," I said. "Of course."

"I've got a lot of money here. I mean: really a lot."

She shook her head. "I don't want the money. You don't have to pay me to take care of you when something's wrong."

"It's not for taking . . . look. Look: just stay with me. All right?"

"All right," she said. It was a very small voice.

We walked up the stairs and I carried the Seven Crown in my good hand. And when we got to her room I got right into bed: driving uniform, driving shoes, long underwear, socks, goose-down parka and all. And the bottle.

"Now, then," I said. "Tell me the part again about where race drivers have all the fun."
