CHAPTER TWELVE

Charlie pulled out a pizza from the oven. “This is the boys’ wild boar pizza. It needs a little time to cool.”

“Has Toby eaten, Riley?” Doc Julie Rae asked.

“He did, but he might want a snack with Chuck to be sociable.”

“I’ll bring the boys inside; they can feed Chuck and give Toby a bite to eat too,” Doc said.

“While they wash their hands, I’ll put their pizza and carrot sticks on pie pans and pour milk into their cowboy cups,” Charlie said.

After Kenny and Freddy returned to the kitchen, Riley and Doc Julie Rae carried out their pie pans and milk and set their food and drinks on the table.

“We’ll eat at our campfire,” Kenny said, and they carried their pie tins to sit next to the sticks they’d arranged to be their campfire in the middle of the yard.

After Riley and Doc went inside, Charlie said, “We’re ready to eat. Range Rider poured iced tea and put our condiments and sides on the table while I made everyone’s first pulled pork sandwich. We can sit and chow down.”

While they ate, Charlie peered at the sheriff. “How are them new deputies of yours coming along, Marshal?”

Sheriff smiled. “Better than I expected. The smartest thing I did was to ask Range Rider here to develop a training plan for them. The deputies will be ready to operate independently next week. This is the first time I’ve seen deputies come up to speed so quickly.”

Charlie nodded. “I’m not surprised; that Range Rider does good work.”

When Ben’s cheeks turned bright pink, Doc Julie Rae said, “Don’t mind them, Range Rider; they’re just jealous.”

After they ate, Charlie asked, “Did everyone save room for dessert?”

Charlie pulled out a lemon chiffon cake from the refrigerator. “Riley, Mrs. Smythe gave me the recipe today and asked me to make it for you because she wanted to do her part in making your day special. I won’t send you the recipe because she wanted the lemon chiffon cake to be a bribe for you to return to Barton.”

Tears rolled down Riley’s cheeks, and Ben put his arm around her shoulders. “That is so sweet, Charlie, thank you so much.”

Charlie smiled. “I told her you would love it and invited her to join us, but she declined.”

“She thrives on being at the grocery store where she can help brighten the day for people who are new or need a lift in spirits,” Riley said. “I’m not sure she goes anywhere else except home.”

After dessert, the boys, Toby, and Chuck went outside to play a game that involved running and shouting. Ben stood at the window and watched then put his arm around Riley when she joined him.

“I’ve played that game,” he said.

“What’s it called?” Doc Julie Rae asked.

“Let’s go outside and run around, and maybe they’ll forget it’s past our bedtime,” Ben said, and Doc Julie Rae laughed.

“I was at the top of my class for that game,” Charlie said. “I think I have a trophy and my participation award around here somewhere.
