CHAPTER SEVEN

Molly chuckled as she turned into the driveway marked by a mailbox in the shape of a cow. She’d seen these in town and wondered if Susie might like one in the shape of a cat. The thought made her groan. The letter to Santa she’d dutifully mailed this morning still had kitten at the top of the list. Even more upsetting was a new item at the bottom of the list…a daddy.

I’ll talk to Mrs. Toscano again. Maybe she’ll change her mind about the cat.

The drive along Deer Park Road took her through dormant, pruned vineyards showing rows of stubby stalks. In spring when they leafed out it would be beautiful here. As she climbed the scenery turned to spreading oaks with a scattering of pines. Cade’s cottage was in a clearing at the end of the graveled driveway. A small barn-like structure stood behind the house with a pasture beyond.

Remote and isolated. It suits him.

She took her i-Pad with a keyboard out of her purse, propped it against the hood of the car to take a few notes. Loud swearing came from the barn. Cade’s voice. She’d know it anywhere.

A warm feeling crept up her neck as she followed the sounds. Nobody was in the barn, but a door leading to the pasture was open. Carefully stepping past a steaming pile of fresh manure, she walked to the other side where Cade lifted something over the head of an enormous bull, then stepped back while the animal trotted over to a trough.

He spotted her and motioned her back. “Go back out to the front of the house. I’ll be with you in a sec.”

She wandered back and set a foot on the split rail fence, watching Cade approach the bull, a bucket in his hands. Emptying its contents in the trough he stood back, slapped the animal on the rump, and headed over to her.

“I didn’t expect you this early.” He climbed over the fence in one graceful motion.

“I’m eager to get my story.” She grinned and he responded with an adorable smile guaranteed to melt her insides. Lordy, she had it bad. Teen-aged crushes were long in her past, but this felt exactly like one.

She drifted closer to him, her gaze locked on his sky-blue eyes. In a second, if she was very still, she’d feel those soft lips on her own and the ridges of his hard chest against her breasts.

The bull bellowed, interrupting the moment. Cade turned to look at the bull, his rough breathing telling her he’d felt the pull, too.

“Damn animal eats faster than a herd of cows. Not much grass to snack on this time of year in the pasture, so he gets hand fed.”

“Is he a project? Are you raising him for food?”

He looked outraged. “Absolutely not. That’s Whip. He’s a pet.”

His expression reminded her of the time she asked Lucinda Baudouin if her cat, Mr. Puffins, was a rescue from the shelter. She’d shrieked and said Mr. Puffins wasn’t a cat.
